High friends,
I intend to buy the new cayman, main question scould i buy manual gearbox or triptronic?/fckeditor/editor/images/smiley/MWPX/thanks.gif
Welcome Mechanol,
I was hard set on a Tip, but after reading many of the posts here and asking lots of questions Ichanged my mind and got themanual. I think it really all depends on what you want to do with your car. If you plan on taking it out on the track you obviously would want to get the manual. For me I will not be taking it out on the track, but I got the manual just for the pure joy of it.

<div>The manual gearbox on the Cayman is sooo good, short throw, tight and allows fast shifts. It would be a travesty to choose the trip over the manual imo[/quote]</div>
I cannot think of any other cars that are in my self imposed budget (less than 100k) that I would buy with a manual transmission at this point in my life. Buying a Porsche for me has always gone hand in hand with driving the car, rather than a means of getting somewhere, or, even for that matter as a means to make a statement(don't deny it, we all have egos).
I truly felt that if I did not buy the manual, I would never have recieved the full Porsche sports car experience. This is a third car in a family of two. It is obviously intended for reasons other than transportation. It seemed only right that in order to become fully engaged in the driving, It had to be a manual.
Besides, the first thing that people ask me when they hear I bought a Porsche is whether or not I bought it with a munual transmission. The message is very clear when I say manual and most responses convey a sense of approval and a sort of relief that I did not go down this road and compromise the essence of a Porsche. I expect this question to continue long after I receive the car, and the fact that it is asked so often says a lot about what others have learned through the years. For about a year I had talked to some friends about buying a Mercedes 500SL. No one ever asked me if I was choosing a manual. lets face it, a Porsche is a different animal.
Obviously others will have valid reasons why they may wish to chose Tip, and that, of course, will play a roll in each decision.
Most will choose manual for the experience it offers. If you have a need for a Tip the sport chrono should be chosen alongside providing a more aggressive shift map. The car will be still be enjoyable w/ the Tip. Porsche offers both transmissions because needs and driving styles/conditions vary. In truth no one can answer which is "right" because there is no right or wrong, only your own preferences and needs.
I think kmns has summed it up perfectly. That is what I was trying to say. After I read of couple of posts like that there was no question anymore, I wanted the FULL Porsche experience. But I love the way kmns put it,

On my BMW or my Dad's CLS 500 it was never a question of manual or auto,
'Porsche is a different animal'.

I agree with all of you about having the best driving experience with the manual. Unfortunately for me I have a bad back & can't use a manual on the street. I'm glad Porsche offers a decent automatic otherwise I'd have to get something else. The only other reason to get Tipmight beif you spend most of your time in city traffic. At least with Tip I can pretend I'm Michael Schumacher.
Go for the manual if you can.
I would go for the manual as well. The only cars I get with a auto are the ones that don't offer a manual-such as the better half's Toyota. Manuals are so much more fun to drive IMO.

I really think that manual transmission should the only option. I understand that traffic plays a role, as well as some other issues, but I really think that if those are issues there are prob better cars out there. I know with some tips you can match the revs, but then there has to be a delay in the shift, and that delay is something you really wouldnt want on an upshift.
