Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

The wipers didn't work and I also noticed that the blowers for the climate control weren't working.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've got a 2002 facelift 996 Carrera 4 and tonight when I got into it I had a strange fault which I'm looking for help with. (It was dark and raining) I got into the car and started it no problem. I then pressed the heated rear windscreen button but got no light on the switch. Next I tried the headlights which didn't come on - the dash illumination worked as though the lights were on. The wipers didn't work and I also noticed that the blowers for the climate control weren't working. I turned the engine off and restarted to see if that would do anything. Nothing changed. The high beam would work when pulling the stalk but not when pushing forward as the lights weren't on. I turned it off again, exited the car and locked it via the remote. I then unlocked it, started it and everything worked perfectly. Has anyone had experience of this? Could it be a dodgy ignition switch? Any help would be appreciated.

POST 2Original post

Could be the ignition electrics breaking down, lots of stuff on the forum about it if you search.

POST 3Original post

Quite possibly the ignition switch - it does cause all sorts of gremlins like that. You can change just the switch itself - it is a VW/Audi part (£20 or less). If you take it to Porsche, they change the whole lock assembly (£150-ish in parts). I have a DIY I did for PCGB. Drop me a PM with your email address if you would like a copy.

POST 4Original post

Sounds like it could be a problem with the CANbus system especially as lockingthe car sorted it, I have heard of this problem with the MOSTbus system affecting all of the audio equipment but not the CANbus. On every occasion locking the car sorted the problem.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the info guys. Looks like it is indeed the ignition switch as I can get the fault to repeat by wiggling the key in the ignition. I've got one on order so will update you again when fitted. Cheers Daniel

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I fitted the new ignition switch last night and all is now well! It only took me about 45 mins to fit, thanks to Richard H's superb guide, and all the electrical gremlins disappeared. I went straight out for a drive with a big smile on my face :drive: Cheers, Daniel
