I was able to fix (knock, knock) the infamous
CDR24
display issue after viewing this
youtube
(I was replacing the temp / fan buttons at the time). Basically, (like most folks) everything worked fine but the display randomly works 10% of the time while the rest would be stuck or display alien languages.
I went into this "repair" thinking if this doesn't work, I will just get a new unit with Android Auto / Apple CarPlay (or no radio as I rarely turn on my radio when I drive my 987 Boxster), hence was not shy about botching this job. Since you can find youtubes of removing radio and the link above, I will just share what I learned (I had a long day working on two of our cars on a hot day and couldn't take many pics):
1. Separating the face plate from the body needs patience / some force and was not quick for me - see attached pic and note 4 "tabs" on the main body (I ended up breaking one of the plastic "notches" on the face plate which is glued later with Gorilla glue (not sure it is necessary)
2. I just worked on / cleaned the board inside the face plate - didn't separete top and bottom of the main body at all (like the youtube link above)
3. I cleaned the board using CRC electronics cleaner (and other connections)
4. Then cleaned the "zebra connector" (top and bottom) - this may be "critical" as this zebra connector (you can google for details) basically connects the display to the board. I personally think this is a bad design as I was able to see gaps when I disassembled. This explains (I think) why even "then" newer cars were having this infamous display issue (and, for me, the display randomly worked or didn't work or displayed gibberish / alien language)
5. When re-assembling, align the bottom of the face plate with the main body / metal tabs first then push the top - should click easily.
6. After cleaning and re-assembling, ran into a few issues:
a. the display first said "PROTECT" and I disconnected the power / reconnected
b. then stuck at 88.1 FM and nothing worked (e.g., no responses at all to any inputs)
c. replaced the 10 amp fuse and everything worked "except" for the display (back to where I started)
d. went back and re-cleaned / re-checked the zebra connection
e. still nothing and no responses or "weird" inputs / touches (e.g., push the left side of the screen and I got a message saying "volume", push one of the FM station buttons and I get a "LINEAR," etc.)
7. As I was about to give up and thinking about getting a replacement, I remembered a youtube which said indicated "when you run into a message of "PROTECT" just drive around and it should disappear" and basically went for a quick ride (15 mins?) as my last resort
8. And "auto-magically" everything worked / works after driving for 15+ mins or so - may have taken more than few mins for the car to "re-register" the radio
In short, if you are going to try to resolve the CDR24 display issue, follow the youtube link above, and if that works for you immediately, that's great, however, if it does not (and getting no responses), then first drive around the block for more than 10+ mins to see if the display / CDR24 "auto-magically" comes alive, before doing any additional work / re-work.
Big thumbs up for this post - something I'm sure other people will find useful!
