IF it was me (and it was) I'd remove them (one on each side of the battery) avoiding the potential for the box to fill with water causing flooding inside the car.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

I have a CTEK battery conditioner and want to attach permanent charging leads. The problem is that I can see no labeled ground to attach my negative lead to (unlike what photos of other Caymans clearly show). The manual does not specify where they are, only that they exist. The attached photo shows what I think may be one but I'm not sure and hope someone can confirm or advise otherwise before I commit.. Thanks in advance for any guidance a

POST 2Original post

Any clean bolt/stud on the body. Where ever the negative battery lead goes.

POST 3Original post

I’m pretty sure the CTEK will let you know if it’s not properly connected. Also, you can use a multimeter to test. If you get a reading that is the same as touching the battery terminals, I would think you have found a good ground.

POST 5Original post

CTEK and all other battery maintainers can be connected directly to the battery terminals without any negative ramification. The reason is that the amps are significantly low so no harm can occur. I've been doing exactly that for many, many years. I also confirmed that approach with a major battery maintainer manufacturer quite a few years ago.

POST 6Original post

The risk of connecting directly to the battery is a spark when connecting or disconnecting. Except for this it will do no hard, and the current is not the factor.

POST 7Original post

Never had one spark in 20 years of usage every couple days on multiple cars. I don't plug the unit into the electrical outlet until the battery side is already hooked up. Same with disconnect. Unplug the unit first.

POST 8Original post

The threaded stud/nut your arrow sort of points to.. Is perfect. It's twin is where the battery negative line goes on the other side of the battery. BTW - it appears your cowl drain plugs are still in place (the half-circle at the bottom edge of the photo). It shows because of all the buildup of dirt in the wet box. IF it was me (and it was) I'd remove them (one on each side of the battery) avoiding the potential for the box to fill with water causing flooding inside the car. Just sayin'... the only purpose I can think they might serve is keeping rodents out of the battery area, but since they are sort of open by design I think they aren't super effective for that purpose. Porsche engineers are very strange with drains.

POST 9Original post

I've got my cheap MotoPower charger connected directly to the battery negative - I don't recall what the scant instructions it came with said to do it this way or to connect it to body ground. Should I be worried about this?

POST 10Original post

Your connection is NOT a problem. Typically the instructions I've seen that come with these units say specifically to attach to the battery terminals. I just double checked my fairly extensive instruction booklet, and it also says however, to locate the charging unit as far away from the battery as the cables permit, and to never place the unit directly above the battery as gases will corrode and damage the unit.

POST 11Original post

I just put the charging unit there for the pic - it is never even close to the battery - or the car for that matter - when I actually plug it in.
