above about 80mph the front end of my c4 becomes light and bit wobbly(technical term) ,is this a common trait of porsche due to rear engine,or is my susspension on its way for replacement, cumming from front engined e46 m3 is it just me and do i need to adjust the way i drive or is it the car,did notice on perfect tarmac(something you dont find in this country very often)is a lot better, and allso at high speed corners seems to skip sround the bend a little.was thinking 4 wheel alinghment maybe, any info would be appreciated cheers

Suggestion

In brief, a logical course of action would be to first check the tyre pressures and to make sure there's no excessive wear in not just the dampers but also the ball joints, rubber bushes, etc., and next a ride height and alignment check.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 2Original post

The front of the 911 is very light compare with other front engine cars so you will get that feeling... Add a bit of weight in the front (a sack of cement or something) and you will notice the difference. In reality the car is very stable but the feeling at high speeds might not easy to get used to Theo

POST 3Original post

I wasn't aware that 80 mph was fast in these cars. I used to put concrete block in the front of my VWs but that was back in the 70s. I think the technology has improved since then. Buy digital tyre pressure guage and use it. I was impressed when tyres were spot on for vpressure. Dave

POST 4Original post

I was a little concerned about this when I got mine initially, but that was at higher speeds. Get the alignment checked along with tyre pressures and if all is okay, the nervousness at the front end will disappear. It did for me. Just to add to this. For me it was like a swaying effect at the front when the car skipped over the bumps in the road, mostly under acceleration. Perhaps because the steering is so direct and didn't have a spongy feeling you kind of moved the steering wheel more than you did in other cars without really noticing, if that makes sense. It disappears once you get used to the sensitivity of it.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

POST 6Original post

I'm sure it's just a case of getting more acquainted with perhaps a faster steering rack. Have you had the car long?

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

probally right no about a month, think you are right cheers any way

POST 8Original post

Hi - Check the pressures with a proper guage (not at the pterol station they can by way out) - I run my fronts slightly lower at 32psi (cold) - Wheel Balancing weights may have come off (get them checked and rebalanced if necessary at your local tyre place) - If both the above fails a Geo - Simon

POST 9Original post

I never had this "problem" with my C2, but I suspect it was the M030 suspension which made the difference. If you don't feel comfortable with the car at high speed, maybe think about fitting a splitter to the front PU.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

suspension i hav aero kit but will persivere for bit longer, maybe need to adjust my diving to suit, would i benefit from uprated/lowered springs ?

POST 11Original post

If the car hasn't had a full geometry setup done, then it is definitely worth doing. Everyone here raves about Chris Franklin at Centre Gravity, and he is probably the best person to do the job. A car with M030 feels totally different to the standard suspension package. It gives a much firmer ride, but it feels much more 'planted' especially at high speed. The genuine Porsche kits are very reasonably priced at £536+VAT, but there are several other alternatives. A chat with Chris will give you some ideas about what you can achieve, and how it can improve the situation, either with the standard setup or a new package.

POST 12Original post

Previous comments on tyre pressures, balancing and geometry pretty much sum it all up. All I can add is that my 996C4 felt absolutely rock solid and planted on the road right up to an indicated 175mph. If yours feels less than 100% at 80 theres definately something amiss. Steve

POST 13Original post

Patgas, As Richard said, go and see Chris at center Gravity. I had exactly the same problems with my C4 as you describe. Most of them cured now and the rest will be when I have the time to go back down and get the Mo30 kit fitted. Of note, my C4 had 'sat down' on the springs over time meaning that the slight nose down that these cars should have, which increases with speed had changed to being flat, actually creating lift. fitting a couple of spacers at the back made an incredible difference. You should not have to drive the car witha full tank of fuel/sack of cement in front for it to be stable. If you do, something's wrong. Mods - maybe time for a sticky on this subject????

POST 14Original post

In brief, a logical course of action would be to first check the tyre pressures and to make sure there's no excessive wear in not just the dampers but also the ball joints, rubber bushes, etc., and next a ride height and alignment check. Being too toed in at the front can make the car feel very twitchy and toed out can make it feel very vague. Alignment position around the rest of the car can lead to it sitting differently which in turn can affect the front toe. The whole alignment set up will need checking (the toe & camber of each wheel is adjustable) and whilst the front track seems to make the most noticeable difference with these symptoms, its no good looking at just this in isolation.
