Suggestion

One coat, no masking (it's made for paint so I'd have to guess it's paint safe) - applied with a small velour pad after cleaning the surfaces with alcohol.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

Hi all, Can anyone advise me on what to buy to improve the black on the wing mirror plastic for the 987 Cayman S ? Photo attached. Drivers side looks ok, but the passenger side needs some TLC. I will do both anyway. I thank you in advance.

POST 2Original post

Least invasive first? Have you tried a good quality plastic protectant or a product such as Mother's back to black? You'll have to reapply it as an ongoing maintenance. Otherwise, to do it right you'd have to disassemble it for best results and spray it. Tape it well for second best results and shoot it with a high-quality paint. Or if possible, order and replace the piece if it's offered as a sub part.

POST 3Original post

Thank you. I don’t particularly want to take off the wing mirror etc as I don’t have a decent work space like a garage. As I’m in the UK, can I get mothers back to black or do you know of an alternative I can get?

POST 4Original post

Do you think this would work? 👇🏻👇🏻 Pardon our interruption...

POST 5Original post

Give it a good clean with diluted isopropyl alchohol mix to remove and residue from waxes/soaps etc and use a ceramic coat. Here in the US you can get Cerakote trim wipes but I'm sure you can get something similar in the UK. I only suggest the wipes as they are convienient. I've used them on the plastic cowl, windscreen surround, the same mirror mount section as above, the plastic rear tyre fairing...anything plastic and they look like new afterwards and it lasts and lasts....

POST 6Original post

I think that would work well. I'd fold my mirrors, make a tight fitting paper skirt then fold them back out, create a wide ring one way or another; protect all other areas from that product even if the manufacturer says it's paint safe. You might want to splurge for a Griots or Chemical Guy's product, it will cost more but it will be high quality. Do it where you can swing the doors all the way open for access that requires less if any safety measures on the bottom section. Chances are good it won't hurt the paint, I only mention it because some stuff says to avoid the paint like Ragg Top, that's when it's great to have a top that comes all the way off.

POST 7Original post

The wipes might be a good ongoing solution once they are cleaned up and back to normal. I’ve opted for the Mothers back to black solution to restore them. Hopefully it works 🙏🏻

POST 8Original post

Pricey, but this stuff is supposed to be the best:

POST 9Original post

Mothers is temporary. This will last much longer.

POST 11Original post

Hi all, I have attached an updated picture. The wing mirror plastic is looking good as new and I only applied it once 🔥

POST 13Original post

I purchased Mothers back to black as suggested above. You can’t go wrong.

POST 14Original post

Meguiars vinyl protectant has always worked well for both vinyl and rubber for me. It comes in a spray bottle, apply to a cloth first for your application. Simple and fast.

POST 15Original post

Ceramic coated - over 6 months later. Other than washing - they haven't been touched. One coat, no masking (it's made for paint so I'd have to guess it's paint safe) - applied with a small velour pad after cleaning the surfaces with alcohol. The only downside - it's less to do to the car and sometimes it's enjoyable making things shine again. Nothing really left on the car to make shine. I've also used the ceramic coating on my dash - it was slightly faded. Same results and it gets much less dusty.

POST 16Original post

Hey OP, I went with Mothers as well. First, I like the name. Second, I've always liked their products. Third, it was on me shelf. Yeah yeah, I'll have to reapply in a few months maybe, but it made a dramatic difference on my bleached bits with little effort. At least I can see what I have isn't really a disaster. One of these days I'll used up the garage stock or it'll dry out and step up to the ceramic stuff. All good ladies and gents. Cheers

POST 17Original post

As my wife often reminds me - I never let that stop me from trying a new product. I have waxes going back 50 years.. someday maybe I'll use them up.. "Motorists Wise Use Simonize!"
