This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

10 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all I REALLY want to fit black and silver old style numberplates on my 996, I think they look so good on dark cars (I once saw a gleaming jet black Bentley Azure in Sloane Square with black numberplates, one of the most stylish things I have ever seen!) I understand that in theory the police can discilpline for modern car owners doing this, does anyone have any experience of what they actually do? If its points thats not good! The black TVR below at the recent pistons heads meet is gorgeous, and nice plate colour! Kind Regards Edward

POST 2Original post

£30.00 fine and advisory I believe (some suggestion you have to send a photo showing the car with legal plates as well) Though if you have a private plate and get caught twice they now have the power to confiscate your plate (this is a recent change to the law)

POST 3Original post

Fine was recently increased to £60 I believe. Of course, you could do a "Sean Edwards" and simply dispense with the front plate altogether. Sean says he hasn't been pulled once in the 18 months the plate's been missing. Helps with SPECS cameras too

POST 5Original post

you also may be ordered to an MOT station to get them to confirm it's ok.....hassle, just don't bother

POST 6Original post

I used to often drive about with a tiny front plate, or no plate at all on my old cars. The worst I got was a £30 fine and never asked to get the car MOT'd or anything. If its up to £60 its still a bargain.... just run about with black/silver plates and accept the fact that there is a tiny chance you might lose £60. Not the end of the world! Everyone speeds and thats basically asking for £60 and 3 points but everyone still does it!

POST 7Original post

About 6 months ago...no fine, just a notice to get them changed which also meant returning a stamped (by mot station) confirmation that they were now legal. I was also stopped previously in an M3 CSL and just given a warning. Personally wouldn't bother anymore, not worth the hassle. I went 5 years without being questioned about having a silver on black plate on a non-eligible car but over the last year have been pulled twice.

POST 8Original post

I had to go to an MOT centre and send a certificate to the police. Was told that if it happens again - they'll take me to court - heftier fine and possibly take my plate away! Is it really worth it? Bearing in mind theres so much other stuff going on that could do with police attention, but I suppose us motorists are easy victims.

POST 9Original post

A few of mine...but as i say, i won't bother again.....everything is hassle these days.

POST 10Original post

i think the view is don't bother as not only can it cost you time and money but also, do you really want the local plod "marking"/alerted to your car???
