Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Check asap' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'about' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check asap' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suspected cause
If revs build up quicker and you feel the car is not going faster then a clutch issue is about to arise.

Suggestion
There is a simple fix which requires you to get underneathe and replace the pedal bearing ring which is why its making the creak.

Suggestion
If this is the case there's nothing you can do about it - other than changing the whole assembly - but most importantly it is NOT going to cause you any problems.

Suggestion
To this extent the above mentioned 'classic clutch test' doesn't work at all on the assisted Turbo.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Been loving my 54 996 Turbo coupe for the last 9 months. There has always been a creak when i apply the clutch pedal but the father in law drove it the other day and i got the burning clutch smell when Mr lead left foot had driven it. Since then i am convinced the clutch bite has come right to the top and the thing is going to go. also i get a whine from the visible hydralic pump in the emgine compartment. The whine goes when i push the clutch in. Do these sound connected have i got 1 or 2 issues?
I don't know if the C4S and Turbo share the same clutch or not, but when the clutch in my C4S went a couple of months back the initial indication to me that something wasn't right was that the pedal went light. Within 48 hours or so (and not a lot of miles) it had gone heavy and then started to stick. So in my experience, when they go, they go pretty quick.
Turbo cars have power assistance on their clutches I beleive - might well be from the power steering pump (or is it brake servo?) - if you're getting a whine then maybe it's a connected problem?
The creak you hear is aesthetic and not due to damage to clutch i am assuming your talking about the clutch pedal? There is a simple fix which requires you to get underneathe and replace the pedal bearing ring which is why its making the creak. Usually due to lots of traffic clutch pedal gets worn a little.
However, in regards to the clutch going, a clutch usually goes and you can noticebly tell. Drive up a hill in gear 3 from 20mph and analyse the revs moving along with its speed. If revs build up quicker and you feel the car is not going faster then a clutch issue is about to arise.
Until then I wouldnt worry yourself, thus it could be just your head..
Worth getting it checked ASAP. If 996 Turbo has anything like the 993 Turbo clutch setup you could be facing a hefty bill towards £5k!!
From what I understand having read here, the Turbo clutch is assisted and it takes account of wear/slippage and helps out. To this extent the above mentioned 'classic clutch test' doesn't work at all on the assisted Turbo.

CUE99T or SMTK care to comment?
Here you go it was SMTK who pointed this out, cant find his post about cost but some of the parts are exorbitant.

Is the car low mileage or does it only get minimal use? If so I would say that the creaking that you hear when you depress the clutch is the sound of the clutch plate "fingers" being compressed and then released by the thrust bearing when you depress the clutch pedal. If this is the case there's nothing you can do about it - other than changing the whole assembly - but most importantly it is NOT going to cause you any problems. I'm guessing that you can mostly hear the creaking sound when the engine is off and you either got your window down or your door open...? Mine's been doing this for years - due to lack of use. (MY 2003 996 with 22k miles!!
)
If you're not convinced and you do think that the clutch might soon be an ex-clutch then just find a hill, go up it in second gear and just plant your right foot. If the car pulls you're fine!
As for the burning smell; I thought that I'd cooked my clutch the first time I drove the car "ambitiously" as there was a burning smell that I thought MUST be the clutch. Well, that was over four years and 15,000 miles ago and the clutch is fine. There's always a slight smell of burning when I get out of the car after I've pushed it a bit. I'm starting to think that it must just be a characteristic of the car/engine......either that or the clutch plate must be about an inch thick!?
Hope this helps.
Adrian. :floor:
could you tell me a bit more about the part required, what tools you need etc? any photos? mine has creeked fro a year now, most annoying!
kind regards
