I recently had four new Pilot Sport Ribs installed by the dealer using the Hunter machine.

Can you please elaborate since I use DT quite often.

I used a hunter balancer on my 20" X5 rims and it worked out very well (much harder to balance 20's).
Outcome qualification: Negation, uncertainty or missing explicit repair resolution overrides the raw extraction signal.

Suggestion
The nice thing about the balancer is that it uses a drum that simulates the weight of the car against the tire as it rotates.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm getting new tires tomorrow and the shop had asked if I wanted them "force balanced", where they add 1500 lbs. of pressure to each wheel for a better balance. It costs $25 extra per wheel. I'm not familiar with this. Any advice?
They've got some new fancy Hunter Force Balance machine. I also had never heard of this method. I think you guys just saved me $100 bucks! I'm going with the plain old mounting and balancing.
Let me rephrase then DCP. I did not pass quick judgement. I was referring to them charging him an extra $100 to balance his wheels. I know what the machine is.
The snake oil comment is refferred to the pricing structure for the service rather than the service itself.
The local Porsche Dealer has this machine, but they do not charge extra to do this balancing. It's designed to simulate tire behavior under load. It's odd they consider it to be a "premium" service...
Let me tell you, it's not overpriced if it saves you having to pay to have them balanced a second time. When I had my local Tire Rack approved installer mount/balance new tires on my Boxster a few years ago, it had a vibration that his regular spin-balancer did not show. I had to pay the dealer to do a Road Force balance to find the issue. They actually had to re-index a tire to solve the problem. (FYI - Reindexing means unmounting the tire and rotating it 180 degrees relative to the wheel and remounting it.)
I am admittedly sensitive to balance problems. I do get my winter and summer wheels spin-balanced on my Subaru Legacy GT and they are always fine. But I always had issues with balance on my Boxster, and now on the C4S, that have only been cured by a road-force balance on my P-car.
I agree, they are ripping you off. Try $120 or so for all for including the important road force balance. I too, have had issues balancing wheels. Michelins in particular, cup tires and PS2's. The Hunter 9700 is a great machine. Using it and a great local shop has produced for me a great wheel balance. Not all tire/wheel sets will balance and that is why you need a good machine. They won't all balance because sometimes you get a bad tire. I've had two in two years. Personally, I doubt using equipment less than the 9700 would have resulted in me driving on those bad tires and sacrificing ride- or worse.
I recently had four new Pilot Sport Ribs installed by the dealer using the Hunter machine. The Porsche technician (not an 18 yr old tire monkey at the local mass market wholesale tire store) said they balanced up very nicely. So far, they are very smooth from 0-110 mph. Nary a steering wheel shake or shimy anywhere in between.
One more agree with above on them overcharging. If they have the Hunter equipment, the "Road Force Balance" should be included. $25/wheel extra is bull.
i can give some input on this because i work as a technican in a Discount Tires and we have that machine and since day one i have never seen the "road force balance" get used. we just normally balance the tires and never use "road force balance".
I used a hunter balancer on my 20" X5 rims and it worked out very well (much harder to balance 20's). Although, they charged me only $48 for the entire balancing job. The product is good, the price is just out of whack.
$25 per tire seems a bit high, but worth it if that's the only way to get a tire balanced. The nice thing about the balancer is that it uses a drum that simulates the weight of the car against the tire as it rotates. A static balancer won't do it. While tire manufacturing techniques have come a long way and uniformity is much better, there are still cases where only a roadforce balancer can find a tire that may have a heavy spot or a bit of runout. It can then tell the tech to rotate the tire however many degrees necc. on the rim to match balance to the heaviest spot on the wheel. Yes, many wheels have heavy spots - especailly cast wheels. Sometimes tires get past the quality control dept. and are too heavy in one spot to be able to balance, or the wheels are junk and have a very heavy spot in the casting that won't allow the tire to be balanced. Only the GSP9700 will find it. A static balancer won't.
The machine assigns a number to the amount of "force" it reads on the balance job. I believe anything over 22 lbs. at the tire's optimum position on the rim is considered too "out" to be balanced.

is a great resource on the unit and worth checking out. It's all we use here as well for customer walk ins - and we use it for every car. Sometimes it takes quite a while to get it right, so the charge is because of the extra labor. My dad has a hotrod with some low quality junk tire, and it took our guy 2 hours and about three tries at all four tires to get it the best he could. But he took a shake out of his steering wheel on his 32 that three other shops couldn't.
For what it's worth, I just had my 19" wheels from my S500 done on a Hunter Road Force machine today in North Hollywood, CA at a place called F1 Motorsports (I'm not affiliated in any way). I did not buy my rims or tires from them and they did it for $80 total. I asked about pricing for a Porsche - he said "it's always $20 per wheel, regardless of make or size", which is what I assumed but wanted to make sure.
