I will be flushing my brakes on my 06 Cayman using my Motive bleeder. Is there a brake fluid overflow tube that needs to be pinched closed?
On my 87 911 there is an brake fluid overflow tube behind the front spoiler that has to be pinched off or the brake fluid will piss out all over the floor when you pressurize the system. (I fill the motive with fluid)
TIA for your help.
Aaron
No there isn't. However, you may require the use of a 'turkey baster' to remove some fluid from the reservoir after you have finished the flush to bring the fluid level below the top mark.
Note: I've never seen a brake flush done using the Motive bleeder so this is all theory for me.
Dumb questions here, but are you supposed to fill canister with new fluid to push into the system or do you top off the reservoir in the car and use the air pressure generated by container to flush? Obviously you'll need to top the thing off a few times or you'll end up pushing air into the system, something you DON"T want.
How about the clutch bleeding screw? Do you guys normally bother with it or save that for the scheduled 2-year bleed?
As Nick said, no overflow tube. otherwise the process is the same as on your '87. There's also no need to turn on the ignition or the engine to "cycle the ABS pump" as has been suggested by some posters. That was true for older ABS Porsches.
The Motive can be used either way: filled or dry. I use it filled for a flush (when more fluid is needed) and dry for a bleed (to minimize cleanup time). I also installed an inline valve (simple job w/parts from Home Depot) so I don't lose pressure in the Motive when I disconnect it to top up the master cylinder.
I flush the clutch periodically whenever my knuckles have healed from the last time
... well not even that frequently.
Thanks for clearing that up quickly

That's very nice of you Gator to volunteer showing me how to do this...on my car!
Nick,
You don't need to use a turkey baster.
After you are done flushing/bleeding the brakes, 'before' you disconnect the bleeder (while still pressurized) simply lean over the Motove bottle so the pick up tube inside sucks only air, then you open again the bleeder (caliper) until you see the 'bubble of air' traveling on the Motive hose into the top of the reservoir, then you close the bleeder and release the pressure of the Motive, "Then" you can remove the Motive cap from the reservoir and top off the reservoir. This way you won't make a mess
Thank you for the responses. Now as soon as the weather warms up here in the Northeast I will get flushing.
I would be available for this service also. Bring some new fluid. I like to switch between Porsche's beige and Super Blue so you can see the complete flush via the change in color. Just let me know before hand so I bring the Motive with me. I only carry the hand pump with me.
