I chose Seal Grey for my 997 as I felt it was the perfect colour for a London car.

Suggestion
Maybe change the walnut (or for a starter wrap it to see what it looks like) and then it is not too bad, imho.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hope to buy a 997S at some point this year and after speccing one up at AFN at the w/e, the only hard decesion and one that I am still not sure of, is the colour. (Guess its nice to be in a position to choose a Porsche!
)
Pity you can't 'Poll' on this forum, but which colour is best? I would like flat Black (polishing is a fav pastime for me), but is it going to show the swirl marks/damage too much. Anyone own a 'Black' 997 and wish they had gone for another colour? My Missus, wants to go for the Atlas Grey Metallic, but I think it is not a strong enough colour (may look a little pastey in direct light), so I guess the middle ground is Basalt Black. Is that the most boring choice of all????!!!! I do like Seal Grey and the Artic silver looks excellent but is too common. Blue is a no, so the brave choice would be guards red?
So can I ask some peeps to post a pic of their car and/or thoughts on their colour choice.
Many thanks.
I had a solid black Boxster a few years ago and swore I'd never have a black Porsche again. The combination of warm, slidey surfaces and the local cat's claws meant its bootlid soon resembled something that had been dragged through a bramble patch.
I chose Seal Grey for my 997 as I felt it was the perfect colour for a London car. Different but not too attention grabbing, and not as ubiquitous (at the time) as Arctic Silver.
If you want to see more shots of my car, you could always follow this rather shameless link to the classifieds section...
http://pistonheads.com/sales/76690.ht
I can't agree strongly enough - depending on ambient light conditions, it looks black, grey, dark blue and even slightly brown...!
I originally wanted Basalt black and was then disappointed when I saw the colour in the flesh. When I saw a 997 at the dealership I knew that was the colour for me and each time I look at my car, I know I made the correct decision.
You need to get down to your local dealership and view some physical cars, to make the right choice.
Good Luck!
Sidicks
personally, id go for one of the rarer colours, like this one
www.pistonheads.com/sales/75076.htm
(also a shameless plug, sorry)
for me, its versatility means you dont get tired of looking at it so quickly
With all due respect, whilst silvers and greys are safe, inoffensive colours, that are easy to keep looking respectable, they are just too common now. Something like 65% of 997s are silver or grey.
Mind you they do at least look better with a contrasting interiors such as cocoa or terracotta.

it sure is - shame its a product of abnormal lighting, in a photo studio, arty-farty photographer, touching up and marketing men with clever photoshop packages - would never look that good in real life or to the human eye (otherwise we would all be driving guards red 911s!)
I wonder how many of these people who say how much they love white actually put their money where there mouth is and buy one?
Living in London, I have seen 100s of 997s and not one was white
Yeah, only idiots drive Guards Red porkers....
give me Clitoris Grey/Silver any day. Much more sensible.....
>> Edited by gfreeman on Tuesday 9th May 12:52
Dark Olive Green, you wont see another one and it looks amazing(problem for some is that it has green in the colour), apart from that go for the new lambo gray colour with black wheels. Thats what ill be choosing for my next porsche and i wont even say you copied me.
calm down, calm down - have your toys back an' all
I said if they looked THAT great it would be the ONLY colour of choice, as it is guards red is a good colour on some cars and increasingly popular as IMHO is suits 987/997 far better than 996/986
don't be so sensitive - and if you lady friend's clitoris is indeed grey might I suggest it is time to bury her
>> Edited by Adam B on Tuesday 9th May 13:54
don't need to mate - assumed from the way he jumped down my throat claiming I called him an idiot, he had a dose of guardsferiority complex
nice looking car by the way Mr Freeman
Oi, triple7, get back to the Jaguar forum.
How dare you desert your gorgeous XKR for one of those nasty German things with the engine in the wrong place.
On the subject of colour, if I was fortunate enough to be ordering a new 997, I'd go for white or orange. So tired of the whole silver/grey/black thing.
Nah! Riviera blue! Look at the pic of the RT12 in the post about 997TT against the 'yellow bird' CTR. Luvely!!
>> Edited by paultje on Tuesday 9th May 17:31
Rumbled!
I would 800, but the prices of them pi$$ed me off. £70k for a 300BHP GT Coupe!
I would love to have a new XKR, but they gonna be £80k+
They will depreciate just as fast as the outgoing model me thinks. The 997 should fall at a rather more sedate pace.
Thanks for your input ref: colour, but it'll be red or Atlas at the mo.
G
Yep I see 100s of them too - today was 1 white and 2 red 997s going the other way. White looked fantastic, red didn't quite have the same presence in the flesh as some of the photos you see on this site.
I was undercover in a diesel Focus hire car.... oh how the meek travel.....
Basalt Black with a Zymol Royale wax finish...I pick my 997S up from Guildford next week!
Miracle Paul will treat it to a beautiful wax finish in early June and I will post some photos.
It will look even better than the Evo fq300...which is also black!
Sorry if I upset anyone. I didn't claim you called anyone an idiot.... I was trying to be droll (snigger)...
It just doesn't seem right somehow that having saved up shedloads of cash to buy the ultimate supercar people then select a 'quiet' colour so they don't stand out.... What is that all about????
The reference to a clit was that every c
s got one btw...
drollness was way too subtle for me - no worries
its a consideration for me because I park on the street and unfortunately it pays not to draw attention from scum - at night someone could walk past a black Porsche and not even notice what it was IMHO
>> Edited by Adam B on Wednesday 10th May 17:17
Ah, then you'll be wanting Aventura Green like me... parked on the street, even my girlfriend only realised it was green when I polished it for the first time a couple of weeks ago (I've had the car a couple of years)
Normally looks grey and unmaintained. Never had any vandalism, touch wood
As for getting noticed, the sound it makes does that, I prefer it to hide away unobtrusively in the car park... Don't think you can get that colour on current cars though.
Go with the wifes choice atlas grey, us women know best. if i had a choice the grey does it for me plus i think later at resale it will be a safe colour

How about Bronze, with yellow stitching, belts and walnut!

To answer the op’s question from 18 years ago:
I have a flat black 997 and I really like it. Just sat next to a metallic black (basalt I think) 997 and I was amazed of how grey-ish it looked in comparison.
I desperately need to get it a good polish once again, but there is nothing that compares to that deep flat black.
But my dream colour if I ever would go for a full respray would be PTS Brewster Green

I'd change the seat belts and the dials and throw out the carpets. Easy and inexpensive to do this. Maybe change the walnut (or for a starter wrap it to see what it looks like) and then it is not too bad, imho. The stitching is subtle enough to live with. Not a colour scheme I would have ordere myself, but I have seen worse! Bronze is not half bad and a very 2010's colour.

I love Viper Green but that doesn't work on that car for me.

a solid flat black 997 is like hens teeth. 99% of black 997's are Basalt black. I have been looking for a solid black 997 GTS for 5 years now....one sold on CC a few years ago which I missed out on, and one owner on PH mentioned he has one, but yep 997 solid back, especially in GTS form, is as rare as it gets.
