I found that the oil/coolant fill hatch had become opened somehow (probably a Baltimore pothole..), I closed it and no more noise!

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

Has anyone heard a ratcheting sound (like a ratchet wrench winding up) coming from the engine compartment? Today while driving, I started to hear this ratcheting noise during brief periods of acceleration and deceleration, I became concerned so I pulled over to check it out. I found that the oil/coolant fill hatch had become opened somehow (probably a Baltimore pothole..), I closed it and no more noise! Has anyone experienced this? I remember hearing something like this with Gator's review of the Borla vs stock exhaust system a while back. His car was parked and made a slight noise like this on deceleration with the stock exhaust. Any ideas?? Is it the variable cam mechanism advancing and retarding?? Or is something loose?! Thanks for your input!

POST 2Original post

I think it might just have been normal noise. Once, I didn't latch down that hatch properly, and it popped open while out on the highway -- there was so much extra noise that at first I thought I blew a hole in the exhaust. Once I closed the hatch properly, the noise went away. It's amazing how much noise that hatch keeps out. As long as you don't hear that noise again while the hatch is properly closed , I wouldn't worry about it.

POST 3Original post

Thanks for your input BillC, yes it is amazing how much noise can come from that hatch. I'm not really worried about it now that I don't hear it but I am curious about what is causing it. In 911 's a ratcheting sound coming from the engine generally means a failing cam chain tensioner and impending engine doom! I doubt that this is the case but once again I'm interested in knowing what's going on.

POST 4Original post

Yes, I experienced that too, in exactly the same way. I don't think there's anything unusual about the type of noise - but it is very loud, when the hatch is off.
