Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I have started the task of removing the air box and bits and pieces in readiness for the delivery of my new water pump, thermostat and belt and after removing the belt figured i'd check the condition of my deflection rollers.
Leading evidence: 'Use these ones ->' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check condition of my deflection rollers' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I'm following this as i thought they would need to run easily??
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have started the task of removing the air box and bits and pieces in readiness for the delivery of my new water pump, thermostat and belt and after removing the belt figured i'd check the condition of my deflection rollers. The top one and bottom one both free wheel very easily so from what I have read they are goosed. The tensioning one seems good.
Now I have removed them both and to my surprise they both have the same part number 996 102 120 55. From what I can see online there are 2 different deflectors with differing part numbers.
Any assistance or recommendations greatly received.
Thanks
Before anyone says anything, the bolt is from the Catalytic Converter bracket and nothing to do with either deflector roller. :thumb:

Let me know how you get on.
Somebody like DeMort will be along with more mechanical knowledge than myself.
Nicky they came off very easily. From what I have heard they should not spin freely. They should have resistance and stop pretty much as soon as you push you finger off when turning. When they continue spinning it shows that the bearings are goosed.
Just replace the bearings lads. Plenty of info on here.
Have the pulleys powder coated (but not the bores) if you want to spruce them up a bit.
And yep really free spinning with a bit of noise means they're well worn. You'll see from a new bearing what they should be like. :thumb:
Edit - I covered it here on my old C2.

I think someone on here found a cheaper bearing too. Like £3/4 instead of £20.
I used these ones ->

As advised in this thread ->

Delivered quickly, fitted great and feel fine, ive not started the car up yet but have every confidence that these will be just fine.
Thanks everyone just ordered 3 of these. Will let you know when they have been delivered and fitted.
Thanks

I'm sure Wasz got full pulleys for not a lot of money from one of the German part sites, possibly Autodoc but not 100% Rockauto found it...

Hi
Spinning aside, when you grabbed the pulley was there any play? If not I wonder if the seal can be removed and the bearing re-greased.
Those bearings are pretty expensive! The most expensive standard IMS bearing I can find is about a tenner! Just for comparison.
Tks

I just did the bearings in 2 of mine due to play / roughness. IBU brand 3202-2RS bearings cost about 30€, I think.
And no, the bearing should not have resistance. As long as they spin OK and feel smooth with no play, they are fine.
It's also worth noting that only the bearings in metal deflection pulleys can be changed. Later models have plastic pulleys.
Hi
As a result of this thread I checked mine and one sounded dry and spun quite freely, so I removed it popped the seal off, cleaned out the inside (brake cleaner spray then WD40) and repacked it with grease. Runs perfectly now.

Thats worth knowing, it would be interesting to see how long they last.
Getting the old bearings out is more difficult than I anticipated. My pulleys are currently sitting in a bath of penetrating fluid awaiting the arrival of the new bearings then I'll give it another go.
