The cap, oring, washer and nut are shown assembled out of the air box and then a photo from the top of it all installed with the black intake pipe!

It took a while to get it right as the threads are all printed on the machine - no after print machining / taps / dies were used so I had to play with thread clearances a bit to get it to all go together smoothly!

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

15 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

  • 911uk: 1 discussions

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

Outcome without a verified action link

I have tried it all ways and makes no difference to performance and very little difference to sound imo.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all 996.2 Targa - I have just received the cold air pipe and cap to block off the helmholz resonator. However, i intend to remove the resonator completely to increase the surface area of the filter a touch - might not make any difference but its a little project! I am going to 3d print 2 plastic threaded parts to cover the hole so that it is fully reversable. I cant find a definative answer on what temperature the rear engine compartment fan starts and stops at - any one know? If I know my temperature ranges I might get away with PLA print material which is much easier than ABS to print but has a lower temperature limit. I am going to print some parts and test them in the oven to make sure they dont warp at the max temperatures before installing. Thanks Chris

POST 2Original post

Bentley manual says for engine compartment cooling fan: Engine running or IGN switch ON:- if engine coolant is higher than 102c and engine compartment temp is higher than 60c the compartment fan is switched on for 30 seconds

POST 3Original post

I have some aluminium plugs I machined last year. £10 delivered if you want one.

POST 4Original post

Have you seen this thread. :?: Don't know if it helps you specifically but it does contain a lot of information. http://www.911uk.com/viewtopic.php?t=60295&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=helmholtz

POST 5Original post

I have done the mod you are doing, including removing the resonator completely from within the airbox. I didnt need to make anything special, the cap covers the hole and the resonator was simple to remove - am intrigued as to what you are making? Would love a 3d printer, but having looked at a few, it seems they need a lot of fettling to get decent results and aret tricky to program (for a lay-person like me anyway)..... You will have to post pictures of what you make!

POST 7Original post

I have tried it all ways and makes no difference to performance and very little difference to sound imo. I have put a bung into the pipe and put it the pipe back on so all looks totally standard. I really don't like the look of it blanked off and a silicone pipe in its place max power style. Looks so much neater standard. Each to their own though.

POST 8Original post

I also do a double ended bung that goes in the airbox with resonator removed and otherside in standard pipe. Not visible when fitted.

POST 9Original post

To me this is the way to do it. I know some won't agree but when you look into a Porsche engine bay and see bungs and silicone pipe it just looks a bit wrong. It's ok on a ford or vauxhall or a frog box but on a Porsche hmmmm, not so sure.

POST 10Original post

Alex - I would be interested in one of the double ended bungs if you have any available. I got the full delete kit a while back, but like others I cant bring myself to put a blue silicone pipe in the engine bay... I will drop you a PM.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi, thanks for all the replies! I did see the big thread but couldnt see the points about temperatures for the engine bay. I got a pipe from Spyder performance (was for a 997 but it fits no problem) and it is black so not quite "max power" blue but not quite as straining on the eye! Alex, does your cap rely on an interference fit to hold in place or is it positvely secured - it looks good and if properly secured looks a good option I would happily use! As for 3d printing, well its a new challenge to print a thread so I thought why not, will be doing a basic design tonight and printing it to see what it looks like! I have printed quite a few things but at the moment am focusing on visors for key workers (printed 900 frames so far) but demand is slowing, I guess as manufacuting picks up so I am going to free the printer from visors and print for fun for a weekend! Looking at the temperatures, I should be fine printing in PLA but have a target of temps to cook it to to see if it warps now! Thanks again all!

POST 12Original post

Its a slight interference fit but I just put a lick of super glue around it when I pop it in. Silicone seal would be as effective.

POST 13Original post

Hi Alex, This option of the double ended bung would be great, could I purchase one please? Was going to pull the trigger on a "max power" kit this weekend as just been paid but would really prefer the discrete option. If available could you drop me a PM to arrange payment and delivery please. Cheers Steve

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I just thought you might be interested in where I got to at the weekend! The main "CAP" part has a groove and support collar for an Oring to make sure it is air tight. The cap, oring, washer and nut are shown assembled out of the air box and then a photo from the top of it all installed with the black intake pipe! I havent driven the car yet so cant comment on noise changes however I have started printing the parts in black ABS rather than red PLA! It took a while to get it right as the threads are all printed on the machine - no after print machining / taps / dies were used so I had to play with thread clearances a bit to get it to all go together smoothly!
