Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Just to update this, got the second hand assembly fitted today.

Key was in the lock at position 1 so I could disconnect and reconnect the battery without alarm issues.

Nobody can get me the new part until Porsche re-open (i could pay highly over inflated ebay prices but im not that desperate) if i could get the car up and running so all i need to do is fit the new switch housing that would be a good place to be in.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

So I've just reassembled my 996 turbo and was way to fire it up this morning.
Key was in the lock at position 1 so I could disconnect and reconnect the battery without alarm issues. Popped the battery back on, everything came alive and I turned the key to 0 position and all was well. Popped the fuel pump fuse so I could crank it and get oil pressure up. Turned the key and it went all loose. Now it just spins. It was stiff before so I'm assuming it's just failed.
My question is what sounds like it's broken and what do I need to order?
This sounds exactly like what happened to me:

Part numbers and how to in the thread!
Guys, is there a way i can start the car with the barrel removed?

Ill put a wanted ad up just in case as well, you never know....
Barrel removed and in the center of the lock is a small slot .. a screw diver in this and turn it might start the car .. as ive never stolen one of these i cant say for sure but that's about your only option .
Picture of the slot here ..

Second image in ... its also £25.
Have ordered the part demort linked to. I'll use that and make a mental note to buy the revised part once Porsche reopen.
Hopefully I'll get her fired up with the key this weekend
Just to update this, got the second hand assembly fitted today. Interestingly the one that came out had the revised part number and switch.
Will try fire the car up again, thanks for the pointers etc chaps
The switch pack at the back is the usual reason these are changed .. the lock gets very stiff and its this part that normally causes it .. as such you could always swop over your original switch pack to the one you have fitted .
As the purpose of this item is to start the car and provide power to everything else then i feel if it works then no further action is needed .
