Reported cause
Bore scoring is caused by the piston skirt coating wearing off and then the skirt wears score marks onto the cylinder.
Leading evidence: 'piston skirt coating wearing off' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'piston skirt coating wearing off' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check corrosion at the ends of the sills, front' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Check for corrosion at the ends of the sills, front, but mainly rear.

No I don't it's just something I think is showing signs of wear as when the oil filler cap is removed the engine tone changes which is a sign from the research I've done that the AOS could be leaking is not a definite the part itself is reasonable it's just the work involved in labour with bumps to cost up it can be done at a local garage or does it does not necessarily need to be done by Porsche specialist this would also keep the cost down.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

]Hi All,
I'm looking to buy my dream car Porsche 911 996 Carrera 2. Just need some advice on what to look out for as I don't want to get stung.
I've seen one which I'm pretty close to buying but the owner has told me the only thing outstanding is the AOS will need replacing. Is this a major thing??
It's a 2003 97,400 approx mileage. FSH and IMS bearing done.
Thanks
Dan[/b]
What do they mean by IMS done exactly?. AOS is apparently a pain on a manual car and I think impossible on an auto without removing the engine. Check for corrosion at the ends of the sills, front, but mainly rear. Worth getting a PPI with borescope to check for scoring. An earlier car would be a safer bet for bore scoring and IMS bearing issues.

Yes, assuming you are happy to take the engine out. If they claim it isn't a big deal, have them add the price of the AOS and £100 on to the price and they do it. They haven't done it because it is a pain. Why else would you sell a car with an advertised fault?
MC
Bore scoring is caused by the piston skirt coating wearing off and then the skirt wears score marks onto the cylinder. Given it's a wear thing, I wouldn't buy a later 996 at all, as it's bound to happen sooner or later.
I would buy a '98 or '99 car. These have cylinders that are not nearly so prone to scoring and the ims has a dual row bearing that doesn't need changing.
And Mistercorn is absolutely right about the AOS. It's a horrible job to do and generally costs about £1000 to get done due to needing to drop the engine.
Someone on here described changing the AOS with engine in situ as like painting your hallway through your letterbox.
Why do they think it needs replacing... oil usage? Smoke? Either would make me want to check there is not a more potentially expensive cause.
I would certainly want £1000 knocked off the price if its needed.
This is the owners response to the AOS and has reduced from 17.5k to 16k.
I asked do you have confirmation that the AOS needs replacing and this is his response

£16k in a private purchase seems a lot of money for a 2003 car with 97k miles even if it didn't have a potential AOS issue.
NB: I'm assuming it's a manual car - as if it's a Tiptronic it should be even less than that.
Have you viewed it? How does it compare with others that you've seen?
ps. :welcome: to 911uk and 'well done' on coming on here before buying a car. :thumb:
It's got a lot of non-996 bits on it. Don't be fooled into thinking they add any value and if you like the 'individual' look of it please don't be blind to the issues that can affect this model. Get it professionally inspected by someone who knows the marque.
Good Luck :thumb:
I'd be very cautious - if its a 996 modified to look like a 997 then you will have serious problems selling it. It is also strong money for a non-standard car.
Also, now is not the time to be buying IMHO - 3 to 6 months and we'll see where the 'weekend' toy car market is going. No rush!!

I would rather buy a original c2 example pref 97-99 with decent history,it's deffo a buyers market atm, good cars are out there. and welcome to 911
Hi & welcome. No offence but I wouldn't go near that car at that price. There's much better stuff out there at 70% of that figure. Engine note is supposed to change when you remove filler cap and not a sign of the AOS failing.
Whereabouts are you located?
Edit: Sounds to me like it's bore scored and burning oil and the seller is trying to mask that by saying the AOS is on its last legs.
