Suggestion

I debated other locations such as near the passenger side power outlet or removing the smoking package bit and having a lengthwise mount there (would really be my #1 option but I couldn't find any decent flushmount usb+aux connections that were narrow enough) and inside the glove box but in the end I realized that I'd pretty much never be using it as my phone is bluetooth and I didn't really feel like having cables running around in the cabin.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

I've recently gotten a Sony XAV-100 Head Unit along with the required harnesses and mounts to install it on my non- Bose 987.1 Boxster (2006). The installation seems to be fairly simple, however I'm still deciding how to route the USB cable for Android Auto (or CarPlay ). I was doing some recon earlier today and came up with 3 potential solutions, which I'm ordering from most-preferred to least-preferred. Route 1: Through the center console to the storage area under the console lid. Route 1, continued. Potentially exiting at the point of the current cigarette lighter port using something like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B013UHWPO8/ . Or maybe just sticking out the end of a USB extension cable. Route 2: To the space under the dash console switch assembly. This would also be using something like https://www.amazon.com/dp/B013UHWPO8/ . Or maybe also just sticking out the end of a USB extension cable. Route 2, continued. This would imply drilling a hole in the plastic casing under the dash console switch assembly. Route 3: Lined under the edge of the carpet and the center console and the coming out behind the seatbelts, most likely in the area behind the seat boosters which is not visible when the seat is not reclined forward. This would be just the end of a USB extension cable. Thoughts and experiences doing this? Route 1 seems to be particularly more complex than Route 2, but I'd much rather put the phone in the storage space in the back of the Console. Wondering if it's worth it.

POST 2Original post

I went route #1 in my 2009 Cayman . The console has to be removed to do it, and you will obviously need to get the end of the USB cable into the storage area (I ended up enlarging the existing aux/in port), but it is working great. My Pixel happens to fit perfectly in that space (gen 1 and 2 are a little different) and it is nice and clean.

POST 3Original post

Nice to hear that, which part of the console did you tuck the cable along? I was thinking of tucking it on the top corner along the passenger side if possible.

POST 4Original post

Please post pictures Argote when you finish. I want to purchase that same unit for my 987.1 and am curious how it looks. Also are you connecting a rear view camera. I have been thinking that I will need to remove most of the carpeting from the driver seat back to accomplish a professional install. Thanks

POST 5Original post

I put mine more along route #2. I don't really need to use the carplay function, nor the charging function, so I just ran the cord through the subwoofer opening, and tucked it by that lower cubby under the PSM button.

POST 7Original post

I was going to do route #1 and mount it flush in the bottom of the storage bin. There's a few guides floating around showing how to remove the center bit.

POST 8Original post

Yeah, will do! Will upload more once I actually put it in the car this weekend, but for now here's what it looks like in the mount: Sony XAV-AX100 on Porsche 987.1 mount - Imgur I went with this unit because I like the clean design it has and the hardware buttons and knobs, including one for summoning the assistant (or Siri for the Apple crowd). Yeah definitely considering it strongly. I think I'll route the video cables and connect the reverse detection for now but not install the camera yet. I primarily got this unit for Android Auto which, as of now, is wired only. Hence the cable running. Why would you not want CarPlay if you have a receiver that supports it? Good to know that! I primarily got this unit for Android Auto which, as of now, is wired only. Hence the cable running. Yeah currently looking at this guide which is for a short-shifter on a 987.2 but looks like it'll work for my purposes: Porsche 987 Short Shift Kit DIY Guide

POST 9Original post

Hi Argote, how did it turn out? Did you run into any problems? Thanks!

POST 10Original post

Yes, the harness I got was not sufficient for the radio to work as it lacked a switched 12V input and the illumination control. This is as described in this thread http://www.planet-9.com/987-cayman-and-boxster-electronics/175066-cdr-24-replacement-issues.html Since that took more time than expected I have not done the routing to the center console (currently cable is dangling quite clumsily from the panel where the passenger side 12V connector is). Hoping to give it a shot soon, especially since I may have found some simpler instructions that do not require the disassembly of all of the center console (I will update this thread if successful).

POST 11Original post

Thanks for the great information Argote. Which harness did you finally use? After reading the CDR-24 thread I'm starting to think that I will need to have it professionally installed. If you could I'd really like to see a picture of the unit in your dash when you're done and your impressions of the Sony unit itself. Thanks!

POST 13Original post

So I took my console apart today to install a Numeric shift and decided on route 1. I stumbled into a problem, however. I wanted to mount the connector (mine is a USB and 3.5mm combined jack much like the linked amazon part above) flush into the bottom of the center console storage bin, but there's not enough clearance underneath for the part that I have. I'm going to attempt to do some dremeling to shave it down but since there's only about 1" of clearance underneath I'm not sure that it'll work. Plus that's also where the parking brake assembly is, and it's got moving bits. I'm tempted to remove the 12v power outlet in the console and finangle the USB/Aux port in there but isn't that the only place you're supposed to connect battery maintainers to? Or is the passenger footwell jack okay for that? Something I'd recommend is getting short USB/3.5mm extensions and plug the end of the... plug... into those and tuck the ends away down in the center console below/behind the radio. That way if you need to take the console out you don't need to remove the radio because of the cables tethering everything in place.

POST 14Original post

I went route #2. Just seemed at the time to be the easiest solution. I used a similar cable kit from amazon and attached it to the bottom storage bin under the climate control. I had to remove it to cut out an opening big enough to push the connector through. But it turned out ok and is in a convenient location.

POST 15Original post

Looks very nice Argote! Hope you're happy with the sound and functionality over the stock unit.
