Sorry if this has been asked - I ran a few searches without results.
I have a 2005
Boxster S
(Gen 1 987)
I recently had a disaster - last year I decided to change the main foglight bulbs as I hated the yellow color. I bought them from a local auto store - H8 bulbs for the main
Boxster
fogs. Thing is, I didn't realize the bulbs I bought were 12V 100W bulbs and despite their small size, a year later (now) when one of them went out and I ordered some replacements, to my horror I could not get either of the main H8 fogs out because they had literally melted themselves into the fog light assembly, essentially destroying the entire assembly on both left and right sides - they had gotten so hot that they not only had fused with the assembly, that the rising heat had caused the lense on the foglight assembly to start to bubble and melt - crazy!. Basically I had to just order two new fog light assembly for the left and right side of the car. $400 for $15 bulbs!
Anyways, I have ordered new assemblies, and also new fog light bulbs (Xenon Halogen bulbs with 5000K temp to look white and match the main xenons - the ebay site says they are compatible with my car and I know they are 12V 55W as I got them today in the mail -

, so unless I'm mistaken will not cause this melting disaster again? Please, please advise if these 55W bulbs could also melt the assembly. I can't afford another disaster like this! But I'm thinking 55W is just fine???
I also figured that I'd replace the two smaller bulbs in the assembly, but can't find what type of bulb they are, and whilst I would like to replace with something that looks white instead of the horrible low-lit yellow, I want to make sure they won't melt the assembly.
Appreciate help on knowing what model of bulbs these little bulbs are, and safe wattage for the car.
Also - is it ok to drive the car without fog light bulbs installed until i receive my new assembly parts? Will it throw an error that will require a visit to the service department to rectify/clear in the porsche computer? I'd like to avoid further cost given the cost already for $15 bulbs!
Thanks so much!
BTW - I've seen these cool looking xenon LED bulbs in H8 model, which are appealing as they give a nice white color, don't get hot and last ages. However, the site says they are not compatible with my car - can't figure out why? They are the same H8 connector as the bulbs that fit my main fogs, so is it a power thing or that my car needs resistors or something to run them?
I would have thought since the connector is exactly the same as regular H8 bulbs, that they should have been plug and play?

Thanks!
I'm sorry for that. I do think you can drive without the fogs though. Just make sure their wiring is not exposed. But you will have to live with the error message till you replace the bulbs!

got so hot they blew the

and melted the solder they were attached to. No car damage fortunately.
The fog light bulb is an H8 35W, so the 55W bulb you have runs some risk of melting the housing again.
The Bi-Xenon low beam bulb has a color temperature of approximately 4300K. If you want to use a fog light bulb that matches the color temperature of your Bi-Xenon, then you could use either the Hoen Xenonmatch H8 35W (which is what I use) or the Phillips H8 35W CrystalVision Ultra—I use the latter H11 55W as my high beam bulb. They both have a color temperature of approximately 4000K and are an excellent match with the Bi-Xenon low beam.
The small parking light in the fog light housing is a W5W Blue-Vision bulb. It is a lightly blue-tinted bulb and so not as yellow as a clear glass bulb. The W5W bulbs go by many other names, such as 194, 168, 2825, and T10mm wedge, to name a few. If you go to the thread

you will find the place that I ordered replacements for the W5Ws.
Hope this helps.
Thanks very much for this! I don't want to run the risk of having this happen again, so will be ordering what you suggested....i had hoped the 55W would be ok, but not worth the risk.
