The last oil service was done at the dealer, and there is no doubt that it was torqued to MUCH tighter specs than the recommended 17lbs ft.

I found this out while performing an oil change on my son's 2005 Mazda 3!

I've tried using an oil filter strap wrench (nylon), which I broke attempting to remove the housing.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello Pelicans,
I'm having a bugger of a time removing the plastic cover for the oil filter on a 99 996. The last oil service was done at the dealer, and there is no doubt that it was torqued to MUCH tighter specs than the recommended 17lbs ft. I've tried using an oil filter strap wrench (nylon), which I broke attempting to remove the housing. I've also tried two separate wrenches (74 and 76mm) with 14 flats each. None of them can grab enough to remove it, and actually having broken one of my wrenches tells me something is wrong here.
The latter two wrenches were metal aftermarket units purchased from the local auto parts store, but I doubt that even the factory wrench could grip enough to remove the housing, and will undoubtedly strip the flats. I'm stuck at this point, and have NEVER seen an oil filter on this tight on ANY vehicle. Not wanting to destroy the housing in the process, I'm curious as to whether any of you have experienced similar difficulties, and if so, what was your solution for removal of the stubborn part?
I had the same issue with my 2006 997 C4S. Ironically the 2005 Mazda 3 (2.3L engine) filter wrench fits perfectly on the plastic filter cover of the 997 which, I think would be the same size as the 996. I found this out while performing an oil change on my son's 2005 Mazda 3!
I hope that helps?
Good to know. Do you happen to know the part number of that filter wrench? My concern is that the flats will be damaged, and the two filter wrenches I tried just weren't snug enough. Thanks for the response!
I had a similar problem on the E55 AMG. Placed a rag on the inside of the oil filter cup-single layer. If was soft enough to not damage the plastic and provided enough grip to remove the cover. It might work for you too (hopefully). Good luck.
Thanks for the input from both of you.
2porscheguy - I received the filter wrench today, and I'm happy to report that not only did the wrench fit perfectly, it made short work of the that stubborn housing. Thanks again for that excellent tip!!!!
Hey, you're most welcome Yellowb1rd! After all the help that I have received on these forums, I am glad that I was finally able to help out somebody else!
Cheers!
