I'll just drain the coolant through the hose to the housing, is this likely to drain the coolant completely or would I get away with buying 10litre coolant to fill back up ?

I've got a vacum filler sitting somewhere as I assume I'll need this to fill back up and I've 10litre of G12 mix too

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

5 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've found a small leak from the thermostat housing, when replacing this do I just fit the new gasket dry ? I'll just drain the coolant through the hose to the housing, is this likely to drain the coolant completely or would I get away with buying 10litre coolant to fill back up ?

POST 2Original post

It is a dry fit, make sure both faces are cleaned up properly. The top edge is a bit of a tricky bit to reach round to clean. Torque the bolts up and all will be good! I might have a gasket if you're struggling to find one.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the offer Jon, I've manage to lay my hands on one locally. Anyone any idea on amount of coolant likely required once I pull the housing off. I've got a vacum filler sitting somewhere as I assume I'll need this to fill back up and I've 10litre of G12 mix too

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I got the housing stripped out yesterday, for some reason the very bottom bolt was loose and the thread that bolt runs up into was no existent. I can put a bolt right through here to the other side and stick a nut on it or would I be better sticking a helicoil in it.

POST 5Original post

Bad news that, sorry to hear it. For me, a helicoil or timesert would be the 'factory' type repair but in all honesty if it's now a blind hole then bolt and nyloc nut would work. Obviously overtightened and stripped at some point I'd say. When I did mine I torqued them up and it was really low, 8nm or similar which is basically a nip with a 1/4 drive
