Day old car:
1. I had the dealer activate daytime running lights with PIWIS. This has activated the headlights
full strength
, the fog lights, the tail lights, and the license plate lights. Is this normal? I ask this because most DRLs are reduced power and do not illuminate the fog lights, tail lights or license plate lights. Looks like I'm driving a Christmas tree.
2. My radar detector works fine powered by the cig lighter (despite the admonition not to use it for this purpose), but gets no juice from either of the other power outlets, which are supposed to be constant hot. The radar detector plug seems to fit the outlets nice and snug, so would you suspect a blown fuse or ?????? Do the footwell and storage bin outlets share a fuse?
Thanks, Andy
Definitely sounds like a blown fuse to me. Not sure if both outlets share a fuse, but I do know that I had to replace the footwell outlet fuse right after I took delivery of the car.
If you pull the fuse box door, there's a fuse map there. Just pull it out and find which fuse you need to take a look at. There are also spare fuses included in the box.
Interpol photos?
Hey interpol -
Your car looks awesome. Can you post any photos of your baby? All i see is 1 photo of your pedals in your gallery.
Do you have HIDs or Halogen head lights? DRLs in halogens work by switching the power on and off very quickly so it looks like 50% power. You can't do that with HIDs because of the ballast. If you ask for DRL turned on with HIDs, it just means the HIDs are on all the time (pretty sure). As to the fogs being on ... strange.
I had a similar probem with the footwell outlet and my radar detector (Escort) and FM modulator plugs - they wouldn't work unless I plugged an extension plug in first. I think it has something to do with the contacts (or lack there of) in that outlet.
HID. And I thought the same thing: no way to dim them. But the fogs and tail lights? Seems weird to me.
Well that's what I have -- Escort -- so maybe that's the issue. Seems weird that it would work in the lighter, though, and not those outlets.
So where do you get an extension -- is that a Radio Shack kind of thing?
Thanks
Outlet problem solved -- fuse
Blown fuse (F8). Strange in a brand new car, but in doing a search I think I saw where someone else had the same issue.
Also, KC-CS, you might see if your problem was related to the plug head hanging up on the outlet door, preventing full insertion. The first time I tried it after replacing the fuse, no power, and then I realized that the plug had hung up on the outlet door before bottoming out in the socket.
Andy
That is strange that you would have a blown fuse in a new car. IIRC, I did finally get my Escort plug to work if I really crammed it in and twisted it. I have it hard-wired into the fuse box now, so it's no longer a problem.
