Then you can remove the quick charger, push back in the two contacts, close the fuse door, and go in the truck (standing up in the trunck is I think the best place to not wound 2 or 3 disks (of your back, not the ones in the CD changer near by) ..to change the battery.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I also had a few issues with mine when I first got it (still having a few).
Day ONE of owning a Porsche and frustrated already?
OK, after waiting a week I finally got my car delivered today. Of course the driver ran late but hey I kind of expected that. The good news is the car arrived OK and looks gorgeous. The bad new, the battery is dead, dead, dead. So dead it will not even hold a charge so dead they had to push it out of the covered transport truck. So driver and I look at each other like so now what? We both have NO clue what to do next since we cannot seem to open hood with switches. He and I screw around and just laugh I mean what where they thinking when they built this thing? No battery power equals no electricity and the switches to open hood are 100% electrical with no manual backup therefore here we are its getting late / dark in middle of street with NO access to the cars BATTERY to jump it!!!
So RTFM right? OK so we search for the manual and it's nowhere to be found. Want to guess where that turned up? I run home grab the "Porsche 996 The Essential Companion" (good thing I bought the book before the car) and do a quick forum search as well for the answer. We pop the fuse box plug in the jumper cables and open the hood. Charge it for about 10 - 15 mins while we shoot the **** and bam she starts right up. Sounds sweet. I drive her home park and let her sit running for 15 more minutes and guess what happens? You guessed it as soon as I turn it off? DEAD!
So day one comes to a close and I have a glorified German paper weight occupying one of my parking spaces. Now I would have just bought a battery but by the time all the BS was done it was after 9PM and no one was open and so I guess I will be swapping batteries tomorrow morning. Why make jumping a car so damn complicated? Oh yea, and now the drivers window did not go up fully and I can't close the hood or I have to go through the above BS again tomorrow.
Finally, can you guys give me the short answer what battery I need to pick-up tomorrow? I have a Sears, a Pep-Boys and an AutoZone near me. I just know they are ALL going to be clueless when it comes to this car.
so the good news....
you can pick up a battery at your local autozone a duralast H8-DLG is the one that will fit...
the bad news, it is $134.99..
But once up and running, you will love your new car, so it will be money well spent!
**getting the front hood open is easy once you figured it out! the harder part is if the electronic "popper" goes out! Then you have to dig for the manual pull cable under the left fender... or run it down to the front radiator opening to avod that chore down the road!
Don't let day one spoil your ownership experience.. sounds like you bought it online... it could be worse!
big deal.... go look at it.... isnt it beautiful!!!!
so a little dead battery caused a stink, trust me, you are not the first....
did you go look at it yet? - look again
one more look...... sweet huh?
so maybe this dead battery is keeping you from driving it tonight because the universe was mis-aligned and staying home kept something worse from happening....
did you go look at it?
sweet huh!

miamic70, that'll just make you love her that much more when you do get your battery, ivangene i've had my car for 2 years now & i'm always going out to the garage (especially when you do some mods wheels, wing, etc...) & just lookin at her or wipe'en on her, my bedroom is right next to the garage door
LOL, OK guys I do have to admit that I do keep finding myself looking for any excuse to walk outside and look at her.
Give me some battery part numbers and is there a how to guide on how to remove it? I don't see any clamps holding it down but it is in there solid. It has an Interstate MTP-93 i think. I would go check but the damn hood is locked.
Also, I keep reading about jumper points in the engine bay but I can't seem to find them even after finding a few pictures online just does not look like my engine compartment. It's a 2004 40th AE would the X51 package be the reason my engine bay looks different than some of the ones online showing the jumper cable points?
All this didn't happen without pics!
You might want to post pic of your engine bay.....I'm sure someone here will recommend where to attach the jumpers. I remember on mine (no 40th) that I saw a + sign on a metal tab in there somewhere. The - sign would just go to the body as the ground.
Hope this helps and good luck!
well c70.
A dead battery on a car that had no PM and bought from ebay or other... you are going to get off lucky if thats all she needs. (I assumed all the above from between the lines). Stick with it and you will be fine.. You have to understand you now own a porsche... ummm... Its going to cost you $$ of here let me rephrase "its going to cost you $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$".
welcome abord.. Put your money fears aside and just realize you are going to spend it and you will be a much happier camper.
See you around!
another thing.. You better get it started again and make sure you have 13.6 +/- at the battery. You may have less if the battery is REALLY REALLY bad.. Make sure you do nto have an altinator issue
awe crap, we helped him out and now he is off to explore the car.... we wont be seeing him any time soon, that stupid smile he will be wearing too
this is not good
The frustration is just because you haven't been able to really DRIVE it yet! Once you do, all doubts will cease.
The battery is a standard size you can pick up at Wal-Mart, or any auto parts store. I bought mine at Wal-Mart. It's fastened in by a small clamp block at the base- unbolt it (12 or 13mm IIRC) and swap out your old battery with the new one.
Look at it this way, at least the battery isn't as hard to change as a Cayenne battery! The Cayenne battery is under the driver's seat (yes, you heard that right) and it takes a special tool move the seat to gain access to it!
little late, if you follow this thread...... err.... the trial of threads splattered all over the board, the OP already has a bettery... and is on to the 3rd battery thread, the one about the bolt, not the one about which battery, we expect a "where does this battery hose go" thread next
to the OP.... I am just giving you a ration, dont get bent
(all meant in good humor)
Amazing how a dead battery can ruin your day
, but now that you have a new one...all is good again. Don't let that first dissapoinment cloud your 'new' Porsche ownership, at least it was an easy and relatively painless issue. GL with your porsche and....PICS.
More of the PITA getting the right info than anything else and after waiting almost two weeks for the car being shipped and the dealer doing the IMS/RMS I was looking forward to a nice smooth delivery yesterday culminating in a lesiurly drive. But yea now that I threw the battery in there I am a happy camper and learned a little along the way. Took her out for a spin and it is a blast weather sucks so had to cut it short but if it cools down and clears up I'll be back out there for a spin later.
The a/c works great in these cars. It's in the center of the dash and there are a few threads and even a youtube on how to clean the radiators if you are running hot.
Dude.....do you really understand what you just wrote? To me the new owner was excited about finally getting the car than really bummed about the dead battery and he was plagued with the 'WTF do I do now because I own a PCar and want to make sure I put the right stuff in it' syndrome. I get the 'QuitYerBitchin' disease once in a while too but wishing someone a head on accident ain't cool.
Completely uncalled for.
He waited a long time for his first, and it arrives with a dead battery and he can't take it for a test drive. He asked about the battery and jumping the car. He didn't say his car sucks. I would be going crazy if it finally arrived and I couldn't go for drive. He showed more restraint than I could.
You might want to retract your opinion and apologize, or others may wish you a worse fate.

Congrats on your new ride OP! I also had a few issues with mine when I first got it (still having a few). I had a PPI and it passed with flying colors. You will have so much fun with your car that the little issues are worth it.
Dude, I could care less what that guy thinks. Those types are people are rarely worth spending any time on. I never said the car sucks I said I was frustrated that after waiting 2 weeks the thing arrived with a dead battery. I asked for some help and I am thankful for those that provided some helpful tips to get me going.
I love the car it is fantastic that is why I BOUGHT ONE!
Took it to work this morning and the Monday morning comute was almost fun my benz was nice but just ZERO on the fun meter.
+ 1 on driving it to work! It is the main reason why I still get out of bed to go to work. As hard as the morning is sometimes, I always look forward to jumping in the P-car and enjoying the commute, as busy as it could be.
You will love the car, I'm sure of it! And you will love this forum. As you can see, there is plenty of very useful info here. Study the car well and get to know it, I'm constantly getting to know my car better.
Miami,
Now that you got your battery issue resolved, let's get down to the important stuff. It is customary for "Newbies" to post a few pics of their car. So consider this your "newbie Initiation!"
Come on, Newbie, post the @#$%^&* pics!
oh dont get me going. The 911 or 996 isnt a pimple on the *** of a 928. Yes I have owned both. Just sadly, I wanted something a little newer, with parts that are easier to find. Something the girls looked at more . But other than that, the 928 is one hell of a car when set up properly and taken care of.
owwww.. hmmmm never noticed.. Im no artist with a pen.. but ummmm thats even a little bad for me... I go fix now with tail between legs! I took no offence... I thought it was in good play
Doh - I'm late to the party... It looks like Pete's pic turned into a test of the national broadcast system. (I can just hear Marc "beeepping" in the background.)
I flew 2000 miles to pick up my car. Got a PPI from the 'biggest porsche dealer in the world' and had the water pump fail 150 miles into my drive home. Was stuck on the side of I95 in a horrendous rainstorm...inching my way to the nearest exit...then had my car towed back down to the Porsche dealer only to be hit with a $900 bill the next day. 2 months later...only an oil change, and about 1,000 ear-to-ear grins when i step outside of the building to get into the most amazing thing i have ever purchased. It gets better.
Yea, I "almost" flew to pick it up too. I thought it might be a nice summer drive and a lot of fun to do with a freind. Then the thought of a breakdown and the subsequent disaster hit me
haha....
the other day I was under a 944 turbo and shootin the breeze.... said here I will show you (something on the motor - thinking 911) looked up and went.... WTF? where's the motor??? Got confused for a couple microseconds
once batt fully discharged, it's history.
get new one.
posrche is not a car, it's a religion, seriously.
this is JUST your first frustration... there will be more, a LOT MORE.
you know, it's like women. nag nag nag, full of it... but when you get it right..... ah!!!!
drive the thing and u will understand in spades.
Well, 26 years of 911 non stop, but still, if I would meet the *+?&@ "engineer" that put the 996 battery in a truck that has only an electric switch to open it, I would ....
Funny that nobody posted that, ..after you RTFM, you will know that you have to open the fuse box, push on the metal contacts to let them popout, connect your quick charger to those two just poped out "metal connectors", then, use the switch to pop the trunck. Then you can remove the quick charger, push back in the two contacts, close the fuse door, and go in the truck (standing up in the trunck is I think the best place to not wound 2 or 3 disks (of your back, not the ones in the CD changer near by) ..to change the battery.
Ah, about this location: would it be a place higher up (may be under the roof ??), to have this weight better positionned ???
OK, I know, now, with the P-light cars, you can get (for a $.$$$ option) a very light Li-Ion battery, ..easy to understand. May be this a very cheap option, compared to the chiropractician costs you will need to rehab your back after this DYI !
It really looks like they had a Po(r).. ..lish ** "engineer" that took care of the battery location & design in this car.
It is a (very bad) joke, and I have to agree big time with MiamiC70 !
** In my country, we call this kind of story "Une histoire Belge" (Poland is probably too far !)
