Read evidence and context

Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

12 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

03 996 2.6 C2: How many splines are there on a the diff output shaft/flange 1 Tiptronic 2. 6 speed man Any info would be great..save tearing the car down. I have 4 spares but no clue which is for which trans!!

POST 2Original post

Do you mean the splines on the drive shafts/diff. sun gears?

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

the join shaft with the flange on the end Number 16 on https://www.design911.co.uk/pages/diagramsBrowser.aspx?categoryID=3&diagramID=2844

POST 4Original post

About 44. It mates with the larger gears in this pic.

POST 5Original post

Yes, they were my gears after I munched my diff.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for that, they are from the 3.6 tip box and not the older 3.4 ZF??

POST 7Original post

Yeah sorry 3.4 6 speed manual. Wouldve thought they're the same though.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

You would never have broken the 3.6 one...same box in the 996 Turbo made nr Mercedes..1000Nm of torque capacity..also used in the BB McLaren SLR!!and othe AMG V8s V12 s etc!

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

3.4 cars had a much weaker tiptronic gearbox made by ZF compared to all 3.6l tips including c2 C4 and TT . Most likely failure caused by wrong or no service oils . My bet is ATF was used in the diff by a rank amateur mechanic/owner etc!

POST 11Original post

The diff shares the same oil as the gearbox and its a manual. I have all the invoices for gearbox oil changes using the Porsche recommendations.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Abuse or off spec components are the only other options. Mileage? Have you owned it from new. i have seen lots of "replica or newly reconstituted" FPSHs!! ocs"
