Hello all!
I am about to pull the trigger on a brand new
Cayman S
and it is missing one option that really should be standard - P12 - Self Dimming Mirrors and Rain Sensor. Does anyone know if it's possible to retrofit or is this a too hard/too expensive one? I am not sure how important it really has but all my cars of the last 4 years have had this and I am getting tint too, but wanted to check before I sign on the dotted line!
I did a search but only found topics debating the usefulness of this option and no retrofit info.
THANKS!
Chris
Not sure of the rain sensor but I believe the self dimming is
next
to impossible to install if you didn't get it factory. All the wiring harnesses are supposedly built specifically for the car as it is optioned, therefore no power is available unless you want to go through a lot of problems. I asked this question a while ago and got nothing positive. I think the power issue also affects the rain sensor.
Different strokes ... I really dislike self dimming mirrors, so I'm happy it's an option I could avoid. I've no idea whether it can be retrofit, but for the rain sensor,
see this post
from a year ago.
Interesting - I didn't know this could be retrofitted, but I do know that if you have the factory installed OEM sensor system, it's a part of the windshield, I had to replace the windshield on my
996 turbo
, and it's a different part number if you have the rain sensor.

I was curious about how auto dimming mirrors work.
Gentex Corporation :: Automotive :: How NVS Mirrors Work
Interesting stuff.
And of course...they say it is a "must have".
Gentex Corporation :: Automotive :: Why NVS Mirrors
Darn Troxler effect!
If your previous cars have such features and you did use them, then it is a good idea to opt for it. Because you will defnitely miss it otherwise.
Also , if you do a lot of driving in the country where it is pitchblack, it will also be very handy because the light dazzle coming up even a mile behind you gets pretty annoying. A bit different if you only do mostly urban driving.
My only regret about my CS - no self dimming mirror.
Thanks all, kind of what I thought. Thanks for all the links!
Rain sensor upgrade? You little ripper. Just what I am missing, Often feel like Im driving some old
Toyota
when I have to flick the damn lever. I'll check it out.
Dumb question -
If one approaches a private seller in the middle of a hot day, how does one know whether the car truly has the Self Dimming mirrors/Rain sensor option? Spray water on the windshield? ;-)
I'm with attar, wish i had added self dimming to my order. I believe you can tell if the car has self dimming from the rear view mirror itself, has an on/off switch. Non-self dimming just has the toggle to switch mirror angle.
The rain sensor from the outside of the windshield looks like a dark circle about 3" in diameter... and as mentioned above, there's on/off switches and a small sensor on the rear-view mirror - if it has one, it will have the other....

Thanks beez. Makes sense.
