I am from Sao Paulo, Brasil and I have a 07 CS with nav. I have imported my car from US and it comes with the North America DVD.
In December I was in the internet and I sow this news:
Interpress Motor - Porsche Cayenne é 1º veículo no Brasil com GPS de fábrica
.
For those ones that dont understand Portuguese
I will translate: "All the new cars, starting with the new 08 cayennes will come with the navigation for Brazil. For those who already have the nav sistem the "Only" cost is the aquisition of the DVD".
After this I sow the same news in the Porsche web site from Brasil too:
Porsche Brasil
In the same day I call the only authorized Porsche Dealer in Brasil and they said that the DVD was arriving only in February for that ones that were sold before Jan.08 (I bought mine in December 07).
This week I tried again and they transfer me to the maintance guy. After asking him about the DVD he said very rude befor I finish my sentence: "Only by prior requisition", I said ok, I want to order mine now. Before I finish my frase again he said: "R$ 3.700,00" (about US$ 2,200.00)!!!!
-But I already have the PCM, I only want the DVD. (I said)
-I understand, this is the DVD price (he said) :argue:
I hang up wanting to kill the guy. Ok, I know the cars in Brasil are expansive. I have paid about US$ 200,000.00 on mine CS (In the US I would be driving a F430) but US$ 2.200 for a dvd???!!!
I would like to know if it is possible to copy the dvd and if anyone has this dvd ( I know that is hard to happen). Some people said the DVD is locked.
I am thinking of sending an e-mail to Porsche in Germany to explain what happen and to see if they know what the guys in Brasil are doing/charging.
What do you think?
Tks in advance and sorry if it has some errors in my typing.
Fred
Maybe one of our US sponsor dealership parts departments can order you one?
I concur I would check with a sponsor to see if they can order a DVD for your region for you at a lower price as that does seem quite high. Not that I advocate such things, but a price that high might make a person borrow a copy from another owner and burn a duplicate with a good DVD copy program in which case Porsche gets nothing. I'd think Porsche would want to price DVDs reasonably so it is worth checking on.
you might call him again...i think the price of the dvd drive is $2200, not the dvd itself...having a PCM requires the DVD drive (that is mounted under the hood) also, and maybe that was the confusion?
Reading this just reinforces my conviction to PORTABLE SatNav units. I got a Magellan Roadmate a few years back and paid the extra to have both Europe and US maps. I take it with me from car to car to bike to HOUSE! House being important to me so I can fiddle with the address book and all. It's nice to load POIs (Points of Interests) as well.
I know that you have to have the built-in NAV on the Porsche to get a few other bells and whistles, but I have yet to see any justification for all the extra coin.
I believe in the US the Porsche price of the DVD is about 1/4 to 1/3 of what you are having to pay.
The research and development costs to produce a North America vs. South America DVD are going to be similar. Basically mapping out every road, verifying the data is correct, verifying the DVD software reads it correctly, etc. Of course Porsche themselves are not doing this but somebody is (NAVTEQ?).
Now I would guess Porsche sells at least 4x as many cars in NA vs. SA (probably way more). So the per unit cost to produce for NA is going to be at least 4x cheaper for NA. So in that way I think you could say the cost difference is justified. Your $200,000 Cayman in my mind isn't justified however as I can't see it costing Porsche that much more to localize and ship pretty much the same car over (just Spanish localization?).
However, I'm not defending the costs of the DVD. Really the cost of either is way off the mark when you can indeed get an entire portable unit for less than half the price of a NA DVD. I'm sure someone is making a pile of money. And I would think the ridiculous prices might lead people to piracy and work against them. I'm actually curious if anyone ever buys a NAV DVD from Porsche directly.
My Caymans Nav DVD went missing and I had to source a new one so I am also a bit sensitive to this. Luckily I managed to snag the latest one off of EBay for less than $100 though it was hard to come by (who knows how legal the DVD is, even though it is an authentic copy). You might also want to look on EBay, but I never came across a SA DVD, but maybe I wasn't looking, and I'm sure they are much more scarce for you.
Is it not possible to obtain a 'back-up' copy that is no longer required by a friend
if you aren't insisting on a factory setup you might consider other options like the pioneer nav units...they include built in bluetooth and work much better with ipods too...it will be much cheaper and has much better technology!
That would be great K-Man. I will be glad if you check for me.
That´s what I think first. But all the Porsches sold in Brasil after 2006, came with the dvd drive included. Its the base configuration for Brasil. You cant buy one without the drive.
The problem here (Brasil) is the taxes. We pay 120% to 130% plus of the dealer price + freight amount. In the dealer note the price of my car is US$ 79.000,00.
The list price on the NAV dvd in the US is $535, although it can be had for $200 from the right dealers. If your Cayman cost 3x the price that it does in the US, I'd expect around $1600 for the disk. Granted, that is absurd. Contact Suncoast and ask them for the price. Get the part number from your local dealer to make sure what they are trying to sell you is correct. Then use that to price around.
that must be where the confusion was...in the US it is not standard...you need to let them know you just want the disk
