Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

15 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've just been out in my car to meet a mate for a quick slurp. Within 100 yards of driving I feel a thud through the steering wheel, then another. Next thing, the ABS unit is having a hissy fit like it's working overtime. Various lights start flashing on the deck, then all of a sudden ABS/PSM trips out, lights come on and car is fine (apart from abs/psm). Stop and start the car a couple of times and always the same. At first I thought something was wrong with my ABS unit, but then maybe just a speed sensor. Anyway, just came out the boozer to drive home and it does it again. This time, pulled over straight away and felt my discs. Rear driver side is hot, the rest are cold. Also noticed my mpg is dropping like a lead balloon. In all this excitement though, I never looked at my speedo, but not notice it's stuck on 10mph when I'm in motion. So, to me it looks like the speed sensor on one of the rear wheels is knacked. Am I right in thinking it's the passenger side sensor that the speedo gets it's reading from?

Reenlist says left front mate  http://rennlist.com/forums/964-forum/279170-speedometer-sensor-location.html

POST 3Original post

Oh dear Alex, don`t really know enough about 996`s to help, but I had a similar thing happen in my last Merc daily driver, was wheel bearing failure, took out the ABS sensor, speed sensor, brake disk and hub...........£1300

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Same as the 964? :dont know:

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My Merc did exactly the same (at 80mph on the motorway), although I fixed mine for £100. I got away with just the bearing and sensor.

POST 6Original post

Lol, I chose the drive another 60 miles home option and the car virtually collapsed on the drive :floor:

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I only had 15 to do After effects: https://www.facebook.com/alexander.jon.yates/videos/vb.587124396/10151385884589397/?type=3&theater

POST 8Original post

Lol, mine was worse than that Alex, the local Merc indy had to recover it and when he jacked it up, the NSF wheel fell off the car, he couldn`t believe I had driven it home :floor:

POST 9Original post

Sounds like Steering Angle Sensor. Friend had similar problem, without the speedo malfunction. Brakes also grabbed randomly when wet at not excessive speeds. Threw up a code. A bit of faff to fit and recalibrate.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

UPDATE: Drop the car off this avo with my mechanic. Told him if I was a betting man, I'd have said rear left ABS sensor (as the rear right disc was red hot when it was playing up). Called me back an hour later - rear left reluctor ring (ABS castellated ring) had split in half. He's just sourced a new one for a tenner so should have that whacked on in a couple of days. Much cheaper than a new ABS sensor, although I expect the repair cost will be the same as it's a bigger job fitting the ring than swapping a sensor. Could've been far worse. The joys of owning a 16 year old car

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Edit:........or Merc :floor:

POST 14Original post

Don`t say that, I`ve just bought an 18 year old 100k miles 996.1

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So, my mechanic called me today to say the ABS ring had arrived. Bobbed it down at T-time and just went to pick it up an hour ago (for some reason it took me an hour to drive home  ). Everything back to normal and running perfect. Asked him how much, he smiled and said "call it £30 all in" Happy days!
