Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. I've used a 3.6 version for 10 years, always directly to the battery.

I use the cigarette lighter adapter with no issues.

I use a CTEK MXS 5.0 on both my 996 and my Aston DB9, it is an absolute life saver, both batteries were dead on Friday due to lack of use and me being lazy and not getting them on trickle charge.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Looking for some advice on keeping the battery on a 996 from going flat.
What is the best/ safest way to trickle charge the battery?
I've seen the CTEK one where you charge from the cigarette lighter output. I've read this can damage the alternator.
Is this true??
What do people recommend to buy??
Thanks
Dan

Managed to revive both batteries to condition with it.

If you key CTEK into the

function found at the top right of the banner above you'll get to view dozens of thread on the subject.
NB: You don't need to add an author, just CTEK in the subject line.
Others have also recommended different trickle chargers but CTEK is the overwhelming preference.
I've used a 3.6 version for 10 years, always directly to the battery.
I connected a non- CTEK conditioner via the cigarette lighter and it melted the plug. The contact was poor. Never again, always direct to battery for me now.
I've used the CTEK MXS 5.0 with cigarette lighter adapter for the last 4 years without problem. No damage to the alternator or any other electrical control units or components.
The attached photo is my set up.
The CTEK website indicates the cig. lighter adapter has been updated since I got mine to include a battery condition display as well as connection to the charger.
There are other chargers that have been recommended recently : contained in this post :

Out of interest, does it matter if the cig lighter socket is live all the time or not?
I've used the jump point in the engine bay to charge as I don't have a charger you can plug into the cig lighter, but that might be more convenient..
It is my 2003 996 as i left the usb in the cig lighter and it stayed live after the car ignition was turned off.
I too use a CTEK, i have used an aldi one and to be fair they work well. I like the connections available on the CTEK.
my old '99 car aux socket was open circuit when key removed so wouldn't charge the battery whereas my mates '02 did allow him to charge via the aux socket. I connect direct to the battery which would always be my preference anyway.
