Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

is this your car that you had for a while and just noticed it, or is this something you experience with a porsche...? p-car has the tendency to have the shocks on the hard side btw
Bad shocks will not give you a harsh ride. The 996 is sensitive to tire pressures and the type/make of tires on the car. What pressures are you running? What tires are on the car and how old are they? Do you have 18 or 19 inch wheels? Do you have the M030, sports suspension?
The option codes are on a sticker that is located under the trunk lid.
The recommended tire pressures are a bit high in my opinion. Drop them a couple of pounds and your ride will improve without hurting the tire.
All of the N rated tires get noisey and ride more harshely after a few thousand miles. Some of course are better than others. The Pirelli tires were really bad. I have S02's which are noisey and harsh, but they handle well so they are staying. Michellin has a better reputation. Your car likely has had a few tire changes as the rear tires on these cars wears quickly. Nonetheless, check your tires to see if they are badly worn or in need of replacement.
Furthermore, your tires will ride much more harshely in the winter. They have very low and stiff side walls, which only get stiffer when the outside temperature drops.
It's not your shocks.
Now is a good time to check the rest of the suspension. When was the last time the car had an alignment?
