The whole thing is compounded by the fact that I have an Audi/VW adaptor harness fitted between the cars connectors and the satnav's din unit.

Returned them back to where they were and replaced the fuses but D8 blew again.

all you need is a multimeter,to check for permenant live with ignition off and one that swiches withe the ignition, leave ignition on and pick up the two lives and then turn ignition off the one that is no longer live is your swich, connect them to coresponding wires on your head unit hey presto
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi guys, a couple of months ago I fitted an aftermarket double din stereo etc unit. My car is an 01 turbo and I bought the Audi wiring harness which connects the existing yellow/blue/green harness and the black 8 point socket. Did the wiring hack to make the amp work.
All fine so far but the problem arises when the ignition key is removed. The unit loses saved settings. Getting annoying hitting auto scan and resetting volume every time I put the key back in. Presumably it gets no power when the key is removed. It is specifically removing the key that resets it. If I just turn the car off but leave the key in the socket it works. Removing the key is the key so to speak.
Simple question - is there any wiring hack which will ensure power is constantly available to the unit with or without the key present? This will keep all settings and presumably allow the unit to stay on when no key is present.
Cheers
Your radio needs a permanent live and I would expect that on a 2001 car being pre-most that there would be one at the plug. This needs to be checked with a multimeter or test lamp and if one isn't present then it can probably be wired from the fusebox. How you wire up this permanent live will dictate whether the unit works with the key removed or not.
Connect the black/red wire to whichever wire is the permanent live on the satnav unit. If you have just plugged the Porsche connector into a DIN socket on the unit the red/black wire might not be connected to the correct pin on the socket. It is supposed to be standard, but you should check.
Thanks Richard - should be able to look at it tomorrow. The manual of the satnav unit shows both an "ignition" wire which switches on/off with the key and a separate "battery wire" which bypasses the key and seems to be permanent live.
Im guessing I could (if necessary) have the "battery" ie live wire wired to the ignition cable thereby bypassing the key as a switch?
Edit to say Ill check out where the red-black connects before I do anything!
permanent live
you need both swich wire and permanent live/permenant live just keeps your settings ie time radio stations ect,and swich swiches the unit off with ignition
Cheers Patgas. Will bear that in mind.
It seems the permanent live one which keeps the memory is the problem one. The whole thing is compounded by the fact that I have an Audi/VW adaptor harness fitted between the cars connectors and the satnav's din unit.
Nothing is ever simple!
Im assuming a fuse couldnt be involved?
It's the "Battery Wire" which needs to be connected to the red/black. If it is connected like that, it could be a fuse. Check the fuse chart in the fuse box. There might be more than one.
Help appreciated guys. Ill take it out tomorrow and trace the path of the red/black wire. Complicated by the insertion of the Audi harness but see what I can see.
I will do if no apparent progress tomorrow. Got nowhere until I got the Audi harness but that adds another level of complexity to matters when it comes to tracing a particular wire.

Traced the wires and it seems like the din unit on the head unit has the switch and ignition wires fitted to their opposites on the car. I cut and swapped over the wires on the din unit. Blew the radio fuses (E1 and D8). Returned them back to where they were and replaced the fuses but D8 blew again.
Thats the last of my DIY efforts - off to an expert!
