I changed the load paths to open up more room for exhaust and turbos.

I ran a stocker on mine but I'd love to put something lower profile or at least with a different in/out configuration.

So my plan is to figure out what the max angle of the CV axles should be and then set the motor there.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I recently sold my 1200hp 997.1 911 and was looking for a new project. That was my first Porsche and I really fell in love with the car. I wanted something LS powered this time. I narrowed my list to 997 911 with an LS, a Superlite SLC kit car or a chassis up build of a 1st gen Camaro. I decided that trying to get the SLC or Camaro to the level I wanted for the finished product (interior and detail wise) would just eat up too much time. I could easily see that taking 3 years
Then I stumbled into a build thread of an LS3 in a Boxter, which turned into finding a thread of one in a Cayman. Thought this would be the perfect project. Great chassis, mid engine and I wouldn't have to hand build the entire interior or hand make body panels (I hope...).
The plan for the car is forged LS3, Gallardo (Graziano) transaxle, and Xona Rotor turbos. I plan to make around 1200rw on kill and 700rw in 'road course' mode. This will require a ton of cooling to keep 700rw handled for lap after lap.
At a high level this is the game plan:
Forged stock CU LSA
twin Xona Rotor
Graziano Transaxle (R8 version)
Aftermarket ECU (TBD)
Aim MXS icon dash
Wide body
GT3 front conversion
GT3 rear wing
Large front brakes (TBD)
Aftermarket stereo
Tillet (probably) carbon seats
wrap all interior pieces in alcantara/leather etc.
As much tire as I can fit under it (Michelin Cup 2 on street, A7s probably for track use)
Sounds awesome! If you need any info I have an LS in my
Cayman
and happy to share.
Also we're an AEM dealer so I can hook you up with an ECU... And we're a Brembo dealer... and... You get the idea
Feel free to message me for any info, pricing, etc..
Motor is out, and I have the mockup started! so time for the first real post. Mostly boring for now since it is just a bunch of parts and no real cutting has happened
So I found a donor car. It is a pretty clean
2007 Cayman S
with a freshly built motor. The original had blown up on track and the car was sold to the guy I bought it from who rebuilt the motor. The “guy” happened to be Ken Bowersox (Google him!) which was kind of cool. So I have a fresh 3.4L with lots of new stuff for sale if anybody is interested (and the 6spd).
I got the motor pulled out, but not with out some fun. This is the first mid engine “wide” engine I have removed with my lift and it turns out the lift pads are about 1” narrower than the engine package  . Ill be posting a vide on some of that stuff. I had a slick time lapse I did of it (basically it took 2 hrs to raise the car off the motor instead of 10minutes) but the SD got corrupted ☹
https://youtu.be/ZN5NhD8jnD0
So enough with the boring stuff. The Graziano transaxle showed up. Its huge. I think I can accommodate it and it many ways it fits better, but it 4” wider at the CV flanges meaning that the angle of the CVs is going to increase and the plunge depth require will increase. So I need to figure that out. Note in the video that the flange to front face is actually shorter helping with packaging. VIDEO LINK
Here are some pictures of the ‘box including what looks like shipping damage but it seems no damage done to the transaxle itself.
Pretty much go / no-go time this week. Ill get the motor mated to the transaxle and see how everything lines up. I can’t move the seat due to my height. So the best I can do is a thin carbon seat, but I need the seat back in the standard position.

Anybody that has a
cayman
in one piece (lol).. what is the angle of the CV axle vs centerline of car from a bottom (or plan) view? Trying to figure out how far from stock I am. DSS says I can go 20deg no problem, but that worries me. Any other V8 conversion guys.. I know the Renegade kit pushes the trans pretty far back!
Surprised at the topic. Wouldn't one just do a LS3 swap or add a turbo kit to an existing motor? I think the last thread I read on a LS swap was already having issues with cutting into the chassis and dealing with heat issues.
You might even be better off buying an additional
987.1
TPC already installed turbo and swapping a stock motor into that, selling it. Then finding a 997 3.8L engine candidate then swapping the turbo onto that power plant and placing it into the car. If accounting your time, tuning, value back of selling stock 3.4L and end changed car resale the current plans just sounds like $20k hit vs. what I am suggesting. (997 3.8L turbo vs. Frankenweenie)
I don't know what the angle is but it is extreme and is one of the weaknesses of the swap. The cv boots get shredded frequently with the heat and angle and with traction I believe the factory axle fails as well. Most are not having axle failures but are not using factory axles. John with the
boxster
made it live at first by using tarret spacers with factory axles and then custom axles built by the driveshaft SOURCE not SHOP. Fingers used a 930 cv set with custom weld on adapters with heavy duty custom axles. I have not heard how they are holding up at track days. I thought Josh had better axle angles as he didn't use the renegade kit which puts it back from stock 3-4" but since he used the factory waterpump he might actually be worse I cannot remember. He will chime in I am sure. I have not heard what DS has experienced with his 525 hp crate in this department and Houston is still in progress and in this thread so obviously I don't want to speak for him and would love for him to chime in as well on his plans.

B8- Stock LS motor or a Turbo
Cayman
motor won't make 1000+wheel. if I wanted an easier swap I guess I could have done a Metzger but I might as well kept my
911
. Obviously if I wanted even easier you can make 1000hp ish with a basically stock C7z06. But what fun would that be.
Trust me, anybody that does conversions like this is insane.
HP- I was going to try to target close to stock angle, just dont know what that is. DSS claims that anything up to 20 is perfectly fine and that extreme angles don't really weaken the joint only cause the boot to not last (not sure I buy that).
The Graziano moves the axle CL forward, so it IS better. I also bought a Tillet B5 seat so I should be able to move the engine pretty far forward, but I don't want it any farther forward than it HAS to be. So my plan is to figure out what the max angle of the CV axles should be and then set the motor there. Ill call DS source... thanks!
Can anybody help with the angle of the CV axle in the FACTORY position? Or the distance of the CV axle to the cast subframe (picture/measurement). Sorry.. should have checked that!
I got it from watching John's
boxster
YouTube series LS376. He said not the more popular Driveshaft Shop, Driveshaft Source. He is from GA. He may have said where they were but I can't find the video again. I do have the phone number for the shop that sells the 930 weld on adapters from Fingers' thread.

What that story on that water pump? I ran a stocker on mine but I'd love to put something lower profile or at least with a different in/out configuration.

In the attached model I show the 4" model (its big). The 3D print is the back half of the 3" model.
I am going to test fit the 4" tonight. I would rather go too big.
Don't forget to sub to my youtube, ill have a video up soon of all the progress. Also my instagram gets updated in real time! (sort of)
Little update! Main subframe is built (just tacked together) and I still need to close out the ends and final weld. Accessory bracket is built and fits. I will also be adding a bracket to the back of the WP that braces to the block triangulating that area. Also added some bracing to the chassis and will be adding to that once I do the tin work to close out the firewall.
Next
up this weekend will be finishing the transaxle mount, all of the cross bracing required for the subframe and so on. Will also be hopefully roughing in the turbo mounting.
Plugging away at it. I have the major fuel system parts ordered, body kit ordered and I also test mounted the tillet carbon seat. Things are going way smoother than expected. As soon as I have the transaxle mounts done I will order CV axles.
The only real thing I have decided on is the ECU. I may look into sniffing the Holley canbus as that would get me 90% of the way to what I want.

Pictars: (Ignore the random mounting hardware as I used what I had laying around.. need to order the right sized stuff.)
EDIT: So I can't figure out how to bulk upload. So only posted two pics here. If you want to see the rest check out

, check out my LS1tech thread or tell me how to upload a bunch of pics at once
Cool to have the space and the skills to give it a go, too! BTW, forget about images and this place. It’s been broken for years and no one cares enough to fix it. On the bright side, one can visit your thread on LS1tech (as a non-member) and see the pics beautifully!
Edit: Against all odds, images are working again.
More progress. Reminder to follow my instagram for more up to date stuff!
Lower cross member support is done. I changed the load paths to open up more room for exhaust and turbos. Ill be walking through that in a video in a few days.
Completed a quick walk around of the chassis structure changes, and a video a small piece of the work required!

Re: Cayman / LSA / Turbo / Graziano
Fantastic work! I have read that even the factory cayman suspension is lacking in rear subframe support/rigidity.
What are using to cut this metal stock btw?
