I have corresponded with Farnbacher Loles regarding their 3.8 x-51 conversion for my 06 CS. My only concern is running afoul of CARB regulatory agencies. I have done the bob and weave with them in the past and don't want to repeat. Does anyone have any knowledge or experience. F-L's (and Ruf's) conversion is 50 state legal but probably not CARB "certified". What are the implications for this conversation in California?
based on the fact that the x51 engine is a carb legal engine I tend to think you should not have a problem.
If the engine is fitted with cats it will pass no problem.

Hi admenefee
You should speak to Roger at Orbitracing regarding the X51 conversion to get another view.
Cheers
Herman
I do X51 and 3.8S conversions to the Boxster's or Cayman's in which are 100% Porsche and legal in all states for emissions. All stability controls and CAN line operations are correct as with the engine mapping. I have worked with Rodger H. at Orbit Racing on his and he is located in Florida while I'm in Connecticut. In either case you would be getting the car that Porsche could have built but did not.
Hi admenefee, I think we spoke about this a few weeks ago but to give you an idea There are two cars I know of in California and _neither_ are CARB legal. Both cars went for "pre-tests" and did _not_ pass, which I found suprising myself.
Unless the car actually fails the smog test I can't see there being a problem. Its not like they can pop the hood and have a look-see for modifications
Then again if it fails at the pipe thats another story.
The first way to fail is to have a check engine light.

Probalby a silly question but is the X51 made by posche and in what cars is it common. What is the carrera engine?
Ahh, found the answer that the x51 is from the internal porsche group focusing on racing.
But anyone thought of trying to uses the Carrara gt engine? Don't know the size of it.
Might look over our sponsor's site.

Orton's doesn't mention the x51 I don't think.
Wonder if the gt3 engine can fit? Produces more than 415 hp I believe.
Julian, the 3.8 liter carrera "s" engine is a "plug & play" fit in the Cayman and Boxster engine compartments. I believe the "X-51" is a parts package that can be added to the 3.8 motor (intake modification and something else) that allows the standard 3.8 motor to make a bit more power. The GT3 engine is an entire other animal, more out of Porsche racing parts department. One of the GT3 motors main features is a dry sump oil system, which I've been told means the motor is physically shaped, and probably plumbed differently than the 3.8 liter conversion. This makes physically fitting it in the Cayman and Boxster engine bay difficult and problematical.
With enough money thrown at it my guess is it could be done, but I'm not aware of anyone who's gotten interested enough in spending that kind of coin, given the relative ease of the 3.8 liter solution. If you want that kind of power increase, there is more than one tunner out there offering supercharged 3.8 liter (and for that matter stock 3.4 liter motor) kits. I know Ruf has one out for their version of the Cayman. I would bet Orton could probably do it as well, and there may be others. Some googleing on the web, or even a search of the Cayman Club site will probably bring up more information on your alternatives.
Hmm, I was figuring that the GT3 probably have a similar engine bay compared to the 911, and hence the engine would be similar in terms of hook-up, more so that from a 911 to a CaymanS.
