Having seen something similar elsewhere on the forum and winning a nice 0.1A solar panel charger (my garage is detached and has no 'leccy) at an OPC/PCGB charity night I set about modding my car to allow an external charge point.

Hadn't seen that thread (not that you'll believe me as with the solar panel and extended charge lead it sounds like I almost used your thread as a detailed "How-to"!

Suggestion · Original poster

I was originally "inspired" by the location of the release cable and the outside temp probe and was thinking of running a lead down to the front bumper to hide the connector completely, but thought better of it what with all the weather down there and all the bending!

Suggestion

The cigarette lighter is hot and there is a bit in the passenger door seal to facilitate running a wire into the cabin when it is closed and locked.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

11 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Having seen something similar elsewhere on the forum and winning a nice 0.1A solar panel charger (my garage is detached and has no 'leccy) at an OPC/PCGB charity night I set about modding my car to allow an external charge point. The rationale being that firstly I can top up the battery between uses (which is sadly as little as once or twice a month) and during the winter lay-up (6-8 weeks) I can trickle charge the battery. Secondly, removing my fear of not using the car enough and the alarm/tracker etc sucking the life out of battery such that I am subjected to the 996.1 "Catch-22" lock-out (without battery power to release the boot lid mechanism to access the battery to charge the battery to release the boot lid mechanism etc etc). Yes, I know there are the two "secret" release cables and the "lock-pick" lever release option, but that sounds too fiddly just when you don't need fiddly! So, now I have a charging port (waterproof connecter for a bike Optimate/DataTool/CTEK etc with in-line fuse) tucked under the bonnet lip by the windscreen wiper. Had to extend the cable a foot or so to neatly tie wrap its way via the strut brace and around the scuttle bay to reach the corner (cable neatly tucked away out of sight under the plastic cosmetic trim covers). Fortunately there is a ready-made aperture between the bay trim and the top of the front wing, near the bonnet hinge, allowing the cable out immediately next to the driver's side wiper spindle. When needed I just pull the connector end out of the recess (I left about 6" slack under the trim cover), pop the waterproof rubber cap and connect the charger lead. After affixing solar panel to garage roof, I then tacked the solar charger lead internally across the garage cross-member beams. Droping directly down to where the corner of the bonnet is when car parked in the garage. When not in use I just loosely coil up the charger cable and hang on a hook on the beam. I can also connect up a conventional mains charger via port if necessary. No doors or lids need be opened!

POST 2Original post

Great work - this is an essential modification for those of us who drive infrequently. More info here on battery issues.

Hadn't seen that thread (not that you'll believe me as with the solar panel and extended charge lead it sounds like I almost used your thread as a detailed "How-to"! ) I was originally "inspired" by the location of the release cable and the outside temp probe and was thinking of running a lead down to the front bumper to hide the connector completely, but thought better of it what with all the weather down there and all the bending! Good work!

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ah, found thread I had seen (that changed my location plans) http://911uk.com/viewtopic.php?t=41493&highlight=charge+bonnet

POST 5Original post

Okay - what am I missing here? The cigarette lighter is hot and there is a bit in the passenger door seal to facilitate running a wire into the cabin when it is closed and locked. Why the need for the mod :?:

POST 6Original post

The wife's '99 Cabrio's lighter definitely isn't hot......despite the handbook saying that it is! I think there are others on here the same, and on the RennTech site. Ours was garaged for a couple of months with a solar trickle charger connected.......the battery still went flat! Presumably, it didn't 'trickle' enough! Fortunately, I'd left the bonnet open. A day connected to my bike's Optimate sorted it, no problems since, but I'm looking for a higher-output charger now. Pete

POST 7Original post

Ah - the perpetual "is the cigarette lighter live or not" question. You could either search the forum and read all the posts that say "yes if its a facelift", or "no if its built between '98 & '99" or "yes if its blue with red leather" (okay, I'm being facetious now). The quickest thing to do is plug your satnav or road angel in and then lock the car and look at the satnav screen. As for solar chargers. I tried one but it didnt produce enough juice. I only used the car every two weeks and the solar panel just wasnt good enough. I bought a CTEK7200 which can overnight fully condition and recharge a battery showing c.11-11.5volts. The CTEK 3600 would take 24-48hrs to do that I think. Most people with 3600's can leave them plugged in permanently I guess (parked in garage).

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

1) Pre-facelift neither have live cigarette lighters (ign swithched live - don't fancy leaving my car keys in there, plus the currrent drain on ign setting probably exceeds trickle charge!) nor the handy "+" charge point in the fuse box. Well mine has neither anyway. 2) If I leave my car for two months over winter I dont want to see the following year a nice wire shaped crease nicely embedded in my door rubbers, ready to let in water (and upset my OCD!) 3) How non-[over]engineered is that solution? On the solar trickle charger point, mine does say its rated at 0.1A (not stated if this is Bahrain at noon output?). It does seem to flash (showing charging current) in all sorts of low light conditions, even inside the house out of direct sunlight. So theoretically it would take 84 days to completely charge a non-draining (unconnected) 80Ah battery (assuming 9 hours a day of sunlight). The point is I won it, so no loss if it doesn't work and battery dies anyway (except I could have had the raffled Porsche USB stick instead had I known etc :x ). PLUS I have a CTEK etc charging port outside my locked and dead car! Yipee!

POST 9Original post

Paul is correct. The fag lighter is only permanently live on facelift 996's. On pre-facelift cars it is ignition switched.

POST 10Original post

Right - gotcha. [Yup - I am in a mk2 (live socket and recessed bit in the passenger side door rubber) : sorry]

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Plus you get the fuse box located positive terminal for direct charging / jump leads access.
