I had set my heart on Carmine Red but after seeing a Carmine Red Cayenne at Porsche Silverstone on an experience day it’s quite dull and in the sun it gives off a slight pink taint!!!

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi everyone, I'm going to buy a Boxster GTS with my dad to spread the risk if such an expensive car between the two of us. I spend a lot of time abroad (four weeks out four weeks back), so the idea of being the sole user of a car that could spend up to six months of the year sat at secure air-port parking is really silly. My dad gets use of it when I'm out of the uk, so it's a win-win as far as I am concerned . He bought a brand new Boxster S in 2001 and put me in the insurance, and we had no problems back then. The reason I am posting is that the spec I've chosen is giving me some dilemmas. Between the two of us we have chosen the following spec- White coach work with a blue hood Yachting blue interior Automatically dimming interior and exterior mirrors Reversing camera with park assist front and rear Porsche Torque Vectoring PDK 20" turbo design alloys (they are 20" as standard) Seat heating Cruise control 2-zone auto air con adaptive sports seats plus with 18 way electrical adjustment and memory Elimination alcantara Key pouch leather (matches interior colour) Sport design steering wheel Prep for mobile phone Audio system CDR plus with sound package plus I'm having a dilemma about specifying the PDK and not specifying the PCM. What do you guys and gals think? This will be a second car for both of us. PDK and PCM both come in at around the same option price. Any comments greatly appreciated Forgot to mention I'm also thinking of specifying Bose. Is it worth it?

POST 2Original post

Lots of people don't rate bose in a Boxster or 911. Personally I think its money well spent if you enjoy music in the car. The standard, laughable system cannot reproduce bass as it has no subwoofer. You can't fit any sort of reasonable system comprising amps and a sub (plus fitting) for near the cost of the factory option so I would spec it without a doubt. I'd also have PCM. It's now a nice touch screen system and a £50k car needs factory nav. You don't want to be relying on some two bob bracket that holds your phone and using that instead, not do you want to be sticking a tom tom on your windscreen. It's a brand new Porsche. PDK changes the driving experience completely. For better or worse is down to preference and exposure . I'd lose some of the other options before Bose and PCM if cost becoming an issue. I'd also strongly advise against any sort of blue interior, especially with resale in view .

POST 3Original post

I wouldn't bother with Bose. Road noise is relatively high in 911s and Boxsters so sound quality is never great. It's also another 10kg or so to carry around. I'd keep the normal sound option and enjoy the engine noise instead.

POST 4Original post

Firstly, I think the 'GTS' has been conceived as the most sporting Boxster model, so most will be spec'd to be functional and lwt. As such, I'd definitely ditch the PDK and go for the delectable manual. PDK is very clever, but a Boxster GTS should be all about involvement and driver in-put, IMO. These days I would want the PCM and I really like the Alcantara. Bose is good, but 10kg is a lot of extra weight if correct. A Rear Camera on a GTS seems excessive - front and rear Park Assist will be more than enough, it's not an SUV.

POST 5Original post

I agree with people who talk about a manual gearbox, the GTS is a sporting car so I'd want it. However that's a very personal choice for the both of you. Have you had any time with this gearbox? Try to get a car from Porsche for the weekend to test it. I drove a Boxster S when they first came out and initially I thought it was a revelation, loved it. However after a day driving it I started to suspect that over time the novelty would wear off but I never had the car long enough to know. I knew I would be buying a Turbo in the next year (as I had a Carrera S Cab at the time). So I bought an Audi A3 3.2 V6 with DSG as a daily driver. I know it's not the same but the principle is and after a few months I decided it wasn't for me. I bought a manual Turbo and I don't regret it at all. Like I said, nobody can tell you which is best, you need to try it long term. If you are about to buy a car I'm sure the OPC will be falling over themselves to loan you a car. It might just help you make that decision. Be aware that Porsche will try to make you get a PDK, they'll try to convince you that it's resale value will be less but that's bollix IMO as they will be rare in the future. Edited by Isysman on Sunday 1st June 16:24 The Audi DSG & Porsche PDK are chalk & cheese. I really can't stand driving the wife's TT with DSG, whereas I do like the PDK in my Cayman. However what does irritate me is that the PDK learns how you are driving and modifies its shift points to suit, but when you transition from a slow bit of road to a fast bit it takes a while to realise, and the same from fast to slow. The one thing I wish I had is cruise control; the car just feels wrong pootling along a motorway at 70. Fortunately I don't do many motorway miles.

POST 7Original post

You can certainly live happily without adaptive seats and an auto dimming mirror!

The sound package is dire and has no place in a £50k car.

Anyway point being that the OP should get experience driving a car with PDK as he might save himself a couple of grand.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi, Thanks for the replies. I really like the PDK with the sports plus and the sports exhaust. Had a great time playing tunes with the exhaust changing down the gears and listening to the flare of revs, followed by the fusillade of pops and bangs on the over run also specifying the PDK drops the co2 from 211 to 190 and that brings it down from band K which is £635 to band J, which is £485. I'm not too bothered about resale as we intend on keeping the car for around 5 years and even the very best sat nav's will be out of date by the time the car might be sold. Regarding the blue leather I might stick with the black leather and alcantara

POST 11Original post

I have not driven the manual, all the 981 models I've tried have been loan cars from a Porsche centre The PDK is fantastic! Better than any auto I've ever tried before - well worth a try if you haven't had the chance yet The basic sound system is poor, barely good enough to listen to the weather report. One Boxster S I borrowed for a couple of weeks had the sound package plus - it was perfectly adequate. A decent sound with plenty of power I didn't know you could specify Bluetooth and sound plus without the PCM. If the PCM will only add sat-nav, perhaps that's not worth the cost

POST 12Original post

May want a re think on the PTV unless you intend doing track days? Lovely car but would have the PCM with a black hood and full leather but it's all very subjective..

POST 13Original post

Lovely car all subjective of course but IMHO: why on earth do people want a reversing CAMERA? Sensors are useful, camera picture adds nothing get BOSE personally i would get PCM get the USB universal audio thank god you specced the key pouch save some money by getting paint rather than coachwork black over blue interior every day

POST 14Original post

FWIW, PCM and gear lever trim painted in exterior colour is stupidly expensive but makes the interior an even nicer place to be. I love it and haven't regretted the decision once.

POST 15Original post

I would avoid the blue leather and stick with black. For the little resale value you will have after 5yrs, the blue will just destroy it. I would for the same reason and to have good spec car spec the nav with phone. I had it in my 991 and it's not that bad, I actually found it quite ok. Spec the DAB and the Bose could be passed on if you change the speakers of the Porsche Sound System.. I think that might be the best thing to do to achieve better sound. Foldable mirrors are useful in town and so are the parking sensors.. if camera is necessary spec it.. I dont think it is.. I would spend the money elsewhere. For a Boxster GTS and given the manual is so good.. I would stick with manual.

POST 17Original post

not sure why camera would have helped over sensors (and presumably wing mirrors and eyes) just gives you an image of what is causing the beeping

POST 18Original post

Porsche is offering the rear camera as it will be mandatory for the US market in 2015

POST 19Original post

I've got a reversing camera in my daily. It has destroyed my ability to reverse park. They immeasurably better than beeping sensors and I recommend them.

POST 20Original post

NicD said: Porsche is offering the rear camera as it will be mandatory for the US market in 2015 No yet on the GT3 weirdly... and at this point a number of cars will become 2015 cars ... no ?

POST 21Original post

BOSE on 981 is significantly better than 987 BOSE. BOSE is good for Boxster because you can wind it up with the roof down and actually hear the music.

POST 22Original post

The good thing is that you seem to be making the right choice re the car (well almost as in the video he reviews the cayman...) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fxXrDIevmlY Rarely saw SS so enthusiastic about a motor Makes me doubt I should keep my GT3 order and instead just one of these...

POST 23Original post

Loses a bit of credibility with this wavering over the gearbox?

Interesting that the weight is quoted as being lower - is that just the buckets? Look's great though. S

POST 26Original post

Koln-RS said: Useful video - Boxster or Cayman, I'd want 6-spd manual, Ceramics, PCM, Buckets over Adaptive seats, PSE and a few fripperies. I would pass on the PCCB probably.. the standard brakes are so good already I doubt the PCCB can add that much to it.. and think about replacement cost.. on a 458 or even GT3 I could understand that the owner spending 120k-200k could think about 10k for the brakes.. but on a Boxster/Cayman ? If you need to replace the discs on a 3yr-old car that could be 30% of the value of the thing ! And yes.. if you don't track you should have them for a long time... but chipping of discs happens even if not tracked.. and then you would be facing the bill. At that point you can only go ceramics if you want to keep warranty and re-sale value.. or switch to steel and then kiss goodbye to warranty extension and thus potential resale value. I would really try both on the open road and think if it's worth the extra expense/worry. A good number of GT3 come specced on Steel for a reason......

POST 27Original post

I think the pccbs would be brilliant on a GTS road car, not just for the braking performance but the weight saving, handling, and all the other benefits. I doubt if you would ever wear them out on a 981 road car. They are bound to have contributed to the overall positive packaging on SS's test car.

POST 28Original post

I just wish that the bucket seats came with height adjustment as had to order Boxster GTS with electric adjustable sports plus so other half can drive as buckets were too low for her. Delivery mid July.

POST 30Original post

i have done not much other than look at the GTS this past week! amazing looking car and amazing spec, and a saving over the S if you like the options it comes with. PDK vs Manual, i am not sure on. I love the idea of paddles, but dont use them much on my M235i actually and would go back to a manual in a second. Its good to hear people wanting a GTS in manual, as my concern over resale would be PDK would be a must so nice to hear i may be wrong there. In terms of interior, i love the standard leather / alcantara option, i think dropping the alcantara in a gts is a real shame. Personally it would be carbon bucket seats and keep the alcantara but again its personal choice. In terms of PCM, i think thats a must on a £50k car, and again, even though it might be a "purists car" although its no R, i think PCM is still a useful and worthwhile addition. For me i would save some cash elsewhere, and go manual, alcantara buckets, pcm, bluetooth and electric mirrors. I would love carmine red too but £1500 is a lot for paint thats not that special. now if it was £1500 for mexico blue...

POST 31Original post

I had set my heart on Carmine Red but after seeing a Carmine Red Cayenne at Porsche Silverstone on an experience day it’s quite dull and in the sun it gives off a slight pink taint!!! So after looking at Sapphire Blue, GTS silver, Agate Grey, I went for Black no metallic. I asked my instructor regarding PDK v Manual and in good Porsche fashion he said PDK, speaking to a few others on the day they were all told the same. For me I spent the morning in a manual with carbon brakes so both are on the final spec.

POST 32Original post

my experience day had me in a PDK with carbon brakes, and i must admit apart from ice hill and skid plate where i used manual to keep it in 2nd i had it in auto all day and it was alot less "seeking" than in my M235i. PCCB brakes were amazing too, but i cant justify that much on brakes haha. I havent seen carmine red in the flesh, guessing the cayman at the porsche centre (inside the showroom) is guards red?

V8KSN said: I knew it already but Porsche really are money grabbing b@stards!!! the press cars (Cayman) which are getting the ravs reviews are about £76k that's a lot of money.

POST 38Original post

no, inside you get alcantara wheel, part alcantara seats, alcantara dash etc as standard and GTS emblems on seats. The GTS pack adds contrast stitching and the carbon parts and coloured dials and seat belts.

POST 39Original post

you need GTS pack for GTS emblems on seats :-) as I say for resale you have to have the pack imo once you have 50 cars to choose from every one will want GTS pack at resale. and most will want it new also.

POST 40Original post

doh, reply failed to post. You are correct. I think i would rather have leather / alcantara carbon buckets and GTS interior for £4k than the £3.6k extended leather bucket seat option on the S

POST 42Original post

Correct. As standard the GTS has alcantara sport seats, alcantara lower dash, alcantara door cards, alcanatara headlining, alcantara steering wheel, alcantara gear shift and porsche crests on the seats. The GTS pack gives you red or white stitching on seats, dash & door cards, carbon trim on doors, dash & centre console, GTS logo on seats, red or white edged seat belt and red or white centre dial.

POST 43Original post

so would people be looking for manual or pdk on these? and what seats would people go for and would they ditch all the gts goodies for full leather?

POST 44Original post

As a 2nd hand buyer, manual or PDK wouldn't bother me but it would have to have the GTS interior.

POST 45Original post

You wouldn't have mine then !! No £2K rubbish sat nav No £2K Red stitching Had the PDK You need to spec the smokers pack because it gives you a cover over the centre console dish and another 12V Socket AND its FREE !!!!!!!!! Metallic Black RED roof, Carrera Classic wheels. Audio system CDR Plus incl. Sound package Plus gives you USB and DAB and Hi res screen Bluetooth (the more expensive one) F&R Park Cruse Ps BadX5 because they are rubbish

Righty o I have finally been in an extended test drive of a Boxster GTS Alcantara standard interior is really rather lovely, and the over-riding impression is of improved build quality over the 986. I'm forgetting the yachting blue interior, the alcantara is a GTS signature, so why change it? I drove it on a mixture of different roads, and even with the Sports-Plus button engaged I was very impressed with the ride, and the car would breathe with the road surface, agility and wheel control was exemplary. The car felt extremely stable and mechanical grip was huge, and the crackle and pops from the exhaust on the over-run made me laugh out loud I managed to tear myself away from the dealership to have a think about it, not because they were being pushy, but because I wanted the car so very badly but I'm putting a deposit down tomorrow for April delivery. I'm buying the car with my dad, and it would be lovely for him to have it on his Birthday. factory collection ahoy methinks

Not sure I understand the thinking of Porsche re: engine outputs? A Boxster GTS has same output as a Cayman S and a Cayman GTS has less output than a boggo 911, all with the same engine?! They should've put the 350bhp in all 3.4 variants and come up with something fruity for the GTS'ssssss imvho?

POST 60Original post

nsm3 said: Not sure I understand the thinking of Porsche re: engine outputs? A Boxster GTS has same output as a Cayman S and a Cayman GTS has less output than a boggo 911, all with the same engine?! They should've put the 350bhp in all 3.4 variants and come up with something fruity for the GTS'ssssss imvho? They build the engine and then tune it down with the ECU - in order to create the 'different' outputs for each application. 350 - 991 Carrera 340 - Cayman GTS 330 - Boxster GTS 325 - Cayman S 315 - Boxster S This saves Porsche time and money - and maximises profits as they charge you significantly to step up in performance for something that is already built into the car. It's perfect. Tuning vendors that have been doing work on this engine believe that 350 of the 991 Carrera is also a capped limit and that the 3.4 could potentially output upto 370/hp in its best tune. It has been ascertained that the ECU controlled throttle system starts to close down the throttle and inbound airflow at higher revs restricting the power that can be created - this is also why intake side modifications have limited effect. The key is to crack the ECU - if this is done - it could get really interesting.

I am very positive about my negativity! Sometimes the anticipation makes the experience all the sweeter, or so they say. I have a self enforced 7 month wait for mine as I want it for my birthday Do you think they will limit the numbers of the GTS? It would make sense, but I have heard rumours of an extreme GT4 variant that would be strictly limited. It is one way to keep the values high though.

POST 69Original post

I am hoping the number is limited, maybe driven by (no pun intended) the number of people who choose the Boxster S over the GTS. This forum seems to suggest more opting for the 'S'. I have heard rumours of a Cayman R coming after the GTS but this would seem to undermine the introduction of the GTS re-introduction? Similarly a GT4? Also some rhetoric about the engine not giving up more BHP, though this would of course not preclude a bigger engine. I hope for both our sakes they stop at the GTS and not too many are sold! Regards Paul

POST 70Original post

The GTS is the high end volume model and here to stay until the next generation of cars. The GT4 will be the replacement for the Cayman R, from what we know it will be slightly more extreme but nowhere near the 991 GT3 as some have hoped. Unlikely to be limited because it won’t sell very well as it is. Just look at the Cayman R and Boxster Spyder, both were no big success back then (they sold less than 1500 of each if I recall). Just enjoy the cars and don’t let the other things get to you.

POST 71Original post

.... And now both the R and the Spyder (in particular ) are quite sort after...

POST 73Original post

... And I sold my Cayman R about 2 years ago, but as I have never bought the same car model twice, and fancied a flop top, I hope the Boxster GTS will not disappoint as a replacement.

It's best to put the actual delivery out of your mind until you get that call from your OPC. I am not in any great rush to be honest, my car will be finished next Monday 26th but I am off to Florida in ten days anyway which will make the shipping period seem shorter. I am mainly interested in getting a GTS per se, they are a limited run car which will be rarer than an S so I wanted to snaffle one while I could.

POST 91Original post

Sorry, poor choice of words. I am basing the future rarity of the 981GTS on just how few 997GTS's are in the classifieds, since I expect most owners will hold onto them longer than normal. I was a seriously considering the Jaguar F-Type because of the superb exhaust sound of the V6-S, but the GTS with its tweaked PSE and Sound Symposer now sounds better, much better. http://youtu.be/WRoxpUN8rs0 Plus it's mid engined, handles better and looks nicer in GTS guise. And nobody seems to be speccing Carmine Red, so that makes mine rarer still Edited by koorby on Tuesday 21st October 09:54

POST 92Original post

Mine was promised for mid September when it was still sunny so kind of feel had over having been coerced at short notice to put down a deposit. I tested the f-type and thought it felt heavy and the exhaust note a tad contrived. Stepped into a Boxster S and as Koorby says, a completely different feel and sound. The f-type is good but the Boxster a step up. Given the limited number of build slots for the GTS it seems inevitable they will have some scarcity premium. Hope to post pictures one day soon.

Having just driven a GTS with the sport steering wheel and coming from a manual gearbox I found my left hand would stray to the gear lever, to that end I found it more fun to use the PDK feature in manual mode to change gear. It may be my big fingers but I kept hitting the indicator and wiper stalks when using the paddle shift. Aside from that it was frustrating to turn on the wipers when I wanted to change the view of the MFD using the small stalk under the wiper lever. So dilemma 1 now sorted and current BGTS order is staying with the carbon MF wheel Secondly the look of the SS over the standard PASM setting whilst not taking into account the ride quality is just fabulous. Having driven one with SS the ride quality seems to be no problem, Mrs Bish was along with me oblivious to the SS and had no complaints either so dilemma 2 also sorted. Keeping the SS on order. M. I wouldn't have specced the paddles either, but my car is secondhand and came with them. In manual I almost invariably use the gearstick - you know exactly where to find it regardless of amount of lock. BUT I have found with more extended use that when in auto (which I use perhaps 50% of the time) that the paddles are more much convenient than the switches on the wheel. I often preselect a lower gear prior to overtaking - it stays in "manual" for 10 seconds or so afterwards which can be handy, as can be the fact that it (effectively) also goes into sport mode and hangs onto lower gears for a bit - but quite often it best to "calm it down" by changing up manually with the paddle.

It may be my big fingers but I kept hitting the indicator and wiper stalks when using the paddle shift. Aside from that it was frustrating to turn on the wipers when I wanted to change the view of the MFD using the small stalk under the wiper lever. So dilemma 1 now sorted and current BGTS order is staying with the carbon MF wheel M. Edited by BishBosh on Saturday 7th February 09:36 FWIW my PDK S is my first auto - and agree entirely with what you say about the paddles. This Boxsrer will be my second automatic car, I just find it relaxing in traffic and for a long drive on the motorway, but the PDK is just such an intuitive system to use it was a no brainer for me, and since I prefer the sports steering wheel and the paddles I left well alone. Also I hate paying road tax and the PDK slips into the lower bracket sealed the deal for me

Is PDK the usual left paddle for down and right for up? What is the rocker alternative? Tia

With the rockers push forward (away from you) for up and pull forwards (towards you) for down. Same as the gearshift. I hate the rockers. Whenever I drive a Porsche with the rockers I find when holding the wheel so that the hands are in the right position to operate them I kept inadvertently changing up with the ball of my thumb. To any keen driver the paddle wheel is a no brainer IMO. Edited by dreamcar on Monday 9th February 21:18

Can't believe that no one has retorted to your "keen driver" comment with a reference to stick shifting! They must be getting tired?

Having driven one with SS the ride quality seems to be no problem, Mrs Bish was along with me oblivious to the SS and had no complaints either so dilemma 2 also sorted. Keeping the SS on order. M.
