Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am trying to remove my stock, 01 gear shift to replace with a sweet new TechArt Aluminum ball from CARNEWAL. I have searched previous threads to see the best way to remove it. Not sure if I am on track or not. My best guess is the old Heave Hoe? I have the boot removed, but I dont see any screws, etc to loosen the ****, but it FEELS like if I yank on it, its going to pull the stem right out of the plastic gear housing. Is this the right way and I am just being chicken or is there a different correct way? Thanks

POST 2Original post

Assuming this is a base **** with no set screw at front, just pull hard. Just might need to straddle the center console

POST 3Original post

When I installed my short shift kit (2002 996) there wasn't a set screw.....just pull really hard, and don't knock yourself out.

POST 4Original post

Grab the **** and twist it back and forth. This will expand the plastic sleeve a bit and make it easier to pull off.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

ALL good advice, thanks! Got it off with a twist and a BIG heave-hoe! Pictures to follow!

POST 6Original post

Hi there, I am about to order the TechArt shift knon from Carnewal that will go on my B&M SS, could you post some pics up, thanks!

POST 7Original post

QCC4 - Be careful when you pull the shifter **** off of the shifter. It will take a lot of force, and it will come loose suddenly. You can literally smack yourself in the face if this happens, so be very careful! I took two screwdrivers and placed one on each side of the shifter shaft. The screwdrivers face in opposite directions so you can hold the handle of one screwdriver and the shaft of the other screwdriver in each hand. Put the screwdrivers under the shift **** collar. Sit in the driver's seat and place your left forearm on your right knee. Grasp the left side of the two screwdrivers (already on each side of the shifter shaft) with your left hand, with your palm facing up. Next, grasp the right side of the screwdrivers with your right hand (also facing palm up). You can use your left knee as a fulcrum and pry the **** off. It may go flying straight up, but at least you won't knock your teeth out. Hope this helps.

POST 8Original post

I picture screwdriver blades embedded in a forehead.

POST 9Original post

Yeah, but at least the gear shifter **** won't hit you in the face!

POST 10Original post

Mine hit me in the face. Everything healed up nice.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Sorry for the delay, here is the TechArt shifter. LOVE IT!!! The car drives much easier AND faster!!

POST 13Original post

Thanks, you just made up my mind, how much did it cost from Carnewal (dollar amount) also I'm guessing the shift boot will be in black right? Thanks man! Mick

POST 14Original post

looks nice. I took mine out, had a friend hold on to it with vicegrips and then i pulled as hard as i could. It would have been easier to do before I took it out of the car and put the Short throw in. I guess you learn from your mistakes....

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

[QUOTE=exlondoner]Thanks, you just made up my mind, how much did it cost from Carnewal (dollar amount) also I'm guessing the shift boot will be in black right? I think it was around $300-ish. On the CARNEWAL site there is a link for the Euro conversion. You get the boot in whatever interior color you have/ request from Gert. He was awesome to deal with, since my Savannah boot was on backorder from PORSCHE for over 2 months. Buy and enjoy! It does take a few days for your hand to adjust to the "round" feel when compared to the stock, but after that, there are a few REALLY comfortable positions in which to grip
