I used some citrus-based degreaser and a small brush to clean away most of the dust and grime so I will be able to see how the buildup returns over time.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

I opened up the engine compartment of my 987.1 Boxster 2.7 for the first time since buying it last July. I wanted to replace the air filter and take a look around. Upon removing the engine cover, I was greeted to a very dirty and oily top end. Is it normal for these cars to have so much seepage around the intake runners? I used some citrus-based degreaser and a small brush to clean away most of the dust and grime so I will be able to see how the buildup returns over time. I do get the occasional puff of white smoke every now and then, but certainly not on a regular basis. I had my local indy specialist check and replace the AOS , but he said it was working just fine and I didn't need to replace it. I will assume the occasional white puffs are related to this residue?

POST 2Original post

I posted the same question a couple years ago when I popped off my engine cover to check the air filter (07 Base Cayman ). Mine too was oily, although maybe not quite as bad as yours as it was mainly on the resonance tube. I guess old threads have disappeared, but my recollection is that people said AOS 's are not perfect and some oil gets through and creates the oily areas seen. I checked my AOS at the time, which was fine, and yours is recently replaced, so I guess it may be normal, but I'll let the experts chime in. Picture of mine attached for reference. My car had around 45k miles at the time of the picture. Haven't been in there since.

POST 3Original post

1. Check the easy stuff first. Check the clamps on the intakes to see if they are loose. 2. There is a vacuum driven valve under those two central runners...I once found it disconnected and spitting residue. If it were me I would remove all 8 clamps, remove the two rubber intake hoses, and check for cracks, tears, etc. 3. Related...the rubber hose couplers are easy to misalign...a previous repair job may have left a lip pulled away (gap) underneath where you cant see it.

POST 4Original post

Check your PS fluid level as the vent for the reservoir is under the that part of the intake. Could be a buildup of PS fluid vapor/overflow. Guessing you might find a fair amount of it on the top of the engine.
