Just a heads up that I received 2 warnings the other day while driving. At the same time, my ABS failure light and my PSM failure lights came on. The car did not seem to drive differently but I pulled over immediately, turned the car off, waited a few minutes then turned it back on and everything worked fine. I am bringing the car into the dealer this week to have it hooked up to the computer to see what went wrong (they can check the log). I will let you know what I find out.
It seems like this happened right after I took it out of Sport mode.
There are sensors that are used for both the ABS and PSM........anytime one of these systems has a problem it usually shuts the other one down as they really work in conjunction. I'm sure it should be an easy fix......if really aproblem.
Same thing happened to me. I was stopped at a red light on a moderately steep street, going down, I decided to release the brakes to roll closer to the light for a better view of the cross street traffic, re-applied the brakes , and the lights came on. I pulled over, the seemed to drive fine, shut off the car, started it again and the lights did not come on again. I figured it was just a fluke, and that if it happened again, I would bring it to the dealer. I've driven it about 1000 miles so far and it hasn't happened again. Be interested to know what the shop tells you. [/quote]
Any updates on this? This just happened to me today. It's going into the dealer Friday.
If I were to take a guess, it's the Mass Air Flow Sensor. This is a common problem on many VW's, Audi's, and
Porsche
's.
Very common on the 996TT. When the MAF goes bad, the ABS/PSM lights come on.
Please let everyone know what the outcome is.
Re: ABS & PSM Failure
My experience with ABS PSM failure lights coming on (2008 Cayman Base model - 62,800 miles)
1) Changed my Brake pads, brake pad sensors and rotors on the rear of the car and soon after I heard clicking sound while driving, from the rear end. No lights on at this time, just the sound was uncomfortable. Got it checked at an independent shop and was told the bearing on the passenger rear side has gone bad.
2) Got the bearing changed - ABS and PSM failure lights came on right after. The independent shop checked and found fault on the passenger side rear wheel speed sensor. Flipped the sensor from left rear to right rear (they are the same part), still the same code, so the conclusion was that the sensors were fine. He checked the continuity all the way to the Engine control module, everything on the continuity part looked fine. He suggested at this time that I take to to the dealer as they have better tools to diagnose and narrow down to the problem causing part.
3) Went to the dealer - they said that the bearing had not been put in correctly - turns out that the bearing has sensors built into it. One side of the bearing has magnetic stuff in it which works in conjunction with the speed sensor, the bearing had been put in the housing inside out, although the bearing fits fine physically but the side that is facing the sensor did not have the magnetic stuff in it, so the speed sensor could not detect the speed and thus was showing that the sensor was bad/malfunctioning, this in turn will turn OFF the ABS and PSM function, which in turn will turn on the lights for the ABS and PSM failure and hence the lights come on. Once the bearing was placed correctly , everything came back to normal (ABS PSM lights went off). Car is working fine now.
Note: A new bearing was required this time also as the one put in incorrectly was damaged during its extraction from the housing.
I explained to the independent shop owner what happened, he learnt something new, we all make mistakes, the independent shop owner agreed to compensate me, no hard feelings. Putting my experience here for the benefit of the community here, from which I have learnt and gained a lot. I am sure someone will benefit from this and save time, effort and money and I believe DIY users will benefit from this information.
I have changed myself - 1) the front and rear brake pads/rotor/sensors, relatively easy to do 2) Trunk switch assembly, relatively easy to do 3) Ignition coils and spark plugs, relatively easy to moderate to do
Thanks to all here for all the posts and knowledge sharing.
