I don't have a good shop manual but I believe I read that the 996 3.6 engine does have a secondary much like the old 4 barrel carbs I grew up with and it acts as if it's only running on the front two.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

5 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've owned my 02 996 for about 4 months and have noticed a loss of power. Not the usual, "I'm getting used to it'. The car had a KICK to it above 35-6500rpm but now it's flat all the way up through the rpm range. NO, it's not a dawg but it is noticeable. Before I left on a long trip I had a code reading secondary air injector. I erased it and did a quick tune up in a bottle. Not much change. The day before leaving for return trip back came the code. Called my mechanic Son and he advised some good injector cleaner and some octane boost just to see what happens. After a few hours of driving the CAR WOKE UP!! the kick was back with a big smile on my face. Now it's back to it's lazy days again. Research has given me a few areas such as mass air, secondary air inj. I don't have a good shop manual but I believe I read that the 996 3.6 engine does have a secondary much like the old 4 barrel carbs I grew up with and it acts as if it's only running on the front two. Any ideas. thanks, tom m Ocala, FL

POST 2Original post

I have a 02 with the 3.6 that has been rebuilt to a 3.8. I wound not take advice on a 911 from a mechanics kid. I would start with the basics. 1)Air intake. 2)fuel 3)spark If all those are fine, IE filters and plugs, coil packs, then comes the other stuff. MAF, which you would get a code for. Air injection you can hear it when its shot. Also you can loose power on the higher RMP with a bad clutch, like slipping. I would take it to a good Porsche mechanic. He will figure it out. Robert When my MAS went I got a PCM/ABS light. Car ran fine.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

No strange noises as air injector you explained to me. The car does have a very small idle problem, you can hardly notice it at all and does clear up as soon as I rev to move the car. Clutch is good no slip. I'll start with the obvious as you suggested. The car is so much fun to drive. My last was an 83 911, wow what a difference. This has also been my peace meal as I have just curtailed my racing down to a couple of races a year. Did it for 29 years SCCA, Formula and production. Would love to find a young not so fortunate kid and put him in the Spec Miata I also own but most of the younger kids would rather take their chances on the street. It's a tough sell to get them on the track. Thanks again

POST 4Original post

There is no secondary throttle plate. ~3200 is where the cams change timing/lift toward high RPM profile. One of your cam solenoids may be malfunctioning. I would think it would throw a code.
