Leading evidence: 'Replace & sometimes the top mounts also' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace & sometimes the top mounts also' (1 discussions). Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi guys,
Just wondering if anyone has experienced a strange noise which is hard to describe whilst steering at low speeds? its probably there at higher speeds but cant be heard from engine/outside noise etc as the noise is very low pitch, like scratching a piece of vinyl material with your nail or something like that!
It happens during turning the steering wheel..havent been driving her that much lately and cant remember if its always been there or if im being paranoid...other then that the cars running great now except for whistle at high sppeds coming from around the drivers door mirror??
cheers for any help
peter
When the cockpit is quiet and at very low speeds, like reversing or parking, I can hear a slight noise on mine, always have in fact. Mine sounds a bit more like a spring being flexed though. Never worried about it, and never had any issues with steering or otherwise, i think it is normal and not even a problem that needs a fix.
abcheetham - if you only really notice it when reversing its usually the wheels skipping. The outside & inside of the tyres rotate at different speeds and the tyre flexes. Eventually it becomes too much and the tyre skips a little and the process starts again. Perfectly normal.
Peter - Difficult to help without hearing your noise and could be all manner of things like bearings, trim catching and so. If you're ever in Bolton I'd be happy to have a listen for you.

Peter,
from experience it could well be the strut top bearings. They can become full of grit or a little dry. I have known the noise to be cured by spraying some lube onto the bearings from up underneath the wheel arch with the wheels hanging.
If that doesnt work then the strut top bearings will need to be replaced & sometimes the top mounts also.
I would definately try the lube option first as this can work.
Cheers
John
