Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I changed all of the speakers to Boston Acoustics with a pair JL Audio 6" subs behind the back seats.
Leading evidence: 'Replace of the speakers' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). I swapped out the head unit to an Alpine and I use the Alpine Ipod adapter.

I have the Bose package and I was told that I have optical cables going to the speakers so I would need to replace those if I changed the head unit.

does the nano fit in the ashtray/change holder bit by the parking brake?
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have purchased my first ipod, a nano. What is the easiest and cheapest way to use it in the car with the car stereo. I have a 2004 996 with stock sound.
Tried a search but nothing definitive on this came up. Also, I understand it is an offense to listen using headphones when driving, true? I live in Georgia.
Thanks and seasons greetings to all
does the nano fit in the ashtray/change holder bit by the parking brake? Whenever there is a solution to mate it to the stock head unit, I'd love to mount the iPod there.
Porsche-t,
I see you swapped out the head unit. Did you have to change the speakers too? I have the Bose package and I was told that I have optical cables going to the speakers so I would need to replace those if I changed the head unit. Also, is MOST referring to the fiber optic speaker connection?
Grant
No, the optical cables to NOT go to the speakers. The plastic optical fiber (POF) goes from the headunit, to the amplifier, to the CDChanger, and back to the headunit; it is a ring topology.
Yes, MOST is plastic optical fiber, although there is a new electrical version currently developed.

If you decide to maintain the stock headunit/cables/amplifier/etc, there are 2 ways to add an iPod to a MOST equipped Porsche:
1. DensionUSA/DICE unit. Currently a group buy ongoing by Eric at
http://www.bumperplugs.com/DensionGroupBuy2.html
. He's a good guy and a rennlist sponsor.
2. NAV-TV
www.nav-tv.com
offers hardware as well. There are pictures of the install in the Cayenne forum IIRC.

I swapped out the head unit to an Alpine and I use the Alpine Ipod adapter. I had the hi-fi system originally in my car (sucked). I changed all of the speakers to Boston Acoustics with a pair JL Audio 6" subs behind the back seats.
Porsche-t, Eric or ITC,
So what is the deal with my head unit? I have the CD-R 23 with the Bose speakers. Will the Denison unit work without any other mods? I don't have a CD changer so I wouldn't be missing anything if the Denison link spoofs the changer to connect the iPod. I've been looking around on the board to try to get a straight answer to this but am coming up empty.
Thanks,
Grant
I believe you loose the changer with both Denison and NavTv's product. It works like this 2003+ cars have MOST. NavTv and Denison are both working on solutions for Stereos run on MOST. They are the only two companies that are working on a solution (That I am aware of) MOST stereos do not have aux. ports that will accept an ipod cable. We all agree we want a hardwired solution that lets you control the IPOD programming via the stereo. But it seems like they will never get it to function properly. Both companies keep promising delivery dates and fail. Eric has done a great job keeping us up to date on development but he is at the mercy of Denison.
There is another alternative for MOST equiped cars. The Iplug RDS which taps into your FM cable. While the other guys figure out which way is up I am going to install this product on my car. I ordered one last night. I should have some feedback sometime next week.
Revo sells these for $190

"If you have one of those car radios that show FM station call signs right on the display panel, then you have the Radio Data System feature. RDS transmits data simultaneously with a standard FM radio broadcast. Possible uses include transmitting song titles, station call signs, and signaling when traffic or weather reports are being broadcast. For instance: an RDS-capable Radio can display the title and artist or current song playing, local traffic information, an advertiser's phone number while a commercial is playing, etc. Vehicles with these capabilities can take advantage of the iPlugRDS to display artist name, song name, playlist name."

Check out Scosche Industries, they make an fm transmitter for about $50....I've been using one for a year now and works well as long as you have one of the eight clear fm stations
Not sure about other areas, but in So. CA, I would stay away from any FM transmitters because there are so many damn radio stations that you can't really find anything that will not interfere. Sometimes you find one, then you drive a half hour into another city which has a radio station on the frequency you're using. I've tried two different ones.. The sound quality sucks.
Headphones that cover two ears are illegal in CA. One ear, legal.
FM transmitters with the digital tuners seem to find bare spots ok for me, but I admit the only time I need an iPod is when I go on long trips (away from local radio stations). The rest of the time I am either listening to the engine, or the radio around town...
I Had mine hardwired by a professional installer locally
http://www.LaJollaAudio.com
The nice thing about the install is that the ipod charges even with the car off and when you do shut the car off it shuts the ipod off automatically so your songs do not keep playing. Great and well worth the price. Should have done it a while ago. Cost about $400 to do it.
Hardwired for $400? What unit are you using? I bought the Alpine KCA-420i Ipod adapter for my Alpine tuner and paid $99, and my installer put it in for $20 (only because I didn't know the side panels unsnapped on the console). Mine also shuts off and charges the unit.
