Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

2 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1Original post

So I have what I *think* is a bad front left lower ball joint, but I'm not 100% sure. When I turn my steering wheel left (and to some degree right) I get a creaking sound from the front left. This only happens under load (i.e. not when the front end is jacked up). And it doesn't happen immediately in the morning; only after it's been driving for a bit. It is most pronounced when parked/stopped, and it doesn't seem to happen at higher (over 25 mph) speeds (at least not that I can hear). In motion and at higher speeds (over 65 mph) there is some very minimal (i.e. so little you can visibly see it it) vibration felt in the steering wheel, but it's barely noticeable. However, I don't have the usual "clunk" when going over bumps. When raised off the ground, there's NO play in the left front wheel when holding it at the 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock positions and trying to get it to move. The car doesn't pull to one side, and there's no obvious grease leak at the ball joint. Also, the left ball joint boot feels no different than the right one when poked at with my finger. Anyone have any thoughts? I'd rather not spend $200 on a new control arm only to have it not be the problem.... Thanks in advance!

POST 2Original post

Update - so I don't think it's the lower control arm; I think it's the left tie rod end. But now I have a new problem - I can't get the end nut off the ball joint bolt at the knuckle. I was able to get it a little bit loose, but I can't get it all the way off. And even worse, I can't tighten it back up, so now the tie rod is slightly "loose" in the knuckle. I've tried everything I can think of, including letting PB blaster try to penetrate in between the nut and the bolt threads and heating the nut with a small blowtorch . . . all to no avail. I've actually broken two T40 Torx 3/8" ratchet bits trying to loosen it with a ratchet and an 18mm box wrench. I've also tried using a cordless impact driver (18V Ryobi) with the box wrench, which was equally unsuccessful. If anyone has any thoughts on how I can get this damn thing either off or tightened I'd certainly be grateful. Otherwise, I think it's time to take the car to the shop to let a professional take over. And on that - the shop is 2.5 miles away with all 25mph city street driving, though there is one small traffic circle. Given that the tie rod end bolt is "loose" in the knuckle, I assume I need to have the car towed to the shop? Or do you think I'd be safe driving there ?
