I know the condensers were replaced in the last few thousand miles but I believe the 996 system is overall a bit fragile.

If I get it drained down can I just replace my drive belt with a non-AC one and reduce the parasitic losses?

The reason I ask is that often my car switches the AC on the climate control when I start it and I don't really want the compressor running when the system is empty.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

After waking my C2 up a couple of weeks ago I've been using her every few days. I've noticed a small refrigerant leak coming from just behind the OS wheel. It is a luminescent green colour which I believe means it's had dye put in it to try and trace a leak previously. I know the condensers were replaced in the last few thousand miles but I believe the 996 system is overall a bit fragile. I'm in a quandary as the world is in lockdown at the moment and I need to use the car. Can I just get the system drained down and then look to fix the leak later this year? I live in Scotland so I rarely use the AC anyway!! Who would be able to drain it and dispose of the refrigerant? If I get it drained down can I just replace my drive belt with a non-AC one and reduce the parasitic losses? The reason I ask is that often my car switches the AC on the climate control when I start it and I don't really want the compressor running when the system is empty. Thanks for your help.

POST 2Original post

Just switch your A/C off and you'll be fine. The pump will stop pumping and if you have a leak, you will lose all your A/C gas anyway.

POST 3Original post

The compressor clutch won't engage if the system pressure is too low, so don't worry about that. MC

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the advice. The car hasn't leaked any more so I will just assume all the refrigerant gas is gone and keep the AC switched off for the time being.
