Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

My car had a generic SSK fitted by the previous owner.
Leading evidence: 'Install by the previous owner' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'difference may in part be down' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Adjust properly' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I changed my engine mounts but the originals weren't bad and I suspect the improvement in the gearchange came from lubricating the linkages while I was underneath the car.

Just before the lock down, I changed my engine mounts and unless I am imagining things, that has improved the gear change!

Suggestion
I think the 997 SSK is the only one which can, so this will make it much easier to adjust properly.

In the end I resorted to buying a std shifter from ebay & used that with the green clip to adjust properly & mark the cables before refitting Alex's SSK.

Ps if they are physically measuring the difference in throw they physically it is not much but the 'feel" of the throw is much shorter / more precise.....its like changing a 360mm steering wheel to a 340mm the difference in feel is massive :thumb:

Mike (MAldren) kindly let me try his last year, & while the throw was a bit longer than I'd like, it's perhaps the best all round gear change I've come across on any 996/997 I've tried.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

After deciding to keep the c4s I'm considering adding a short shift kit.
I know the 997 shifter seems to be the most common upgrade but from what I've read, it's not really a shorter throw, just a smoother shift?
Has anyone tried out the cheap ebay options that are around 45quid?and if so, are they alright?
Has anyone got any other tried and tested methods?
Cheers
When comparing a 996 to 997 standard shift maybe.....when comparing to the short shift.....they are ...erm....just wrong

There are only two, ie the GT one with metal bearing and the 'normal" one with plastic......Porsche made the short shift a common part number across a wide range of cars including all 996 and 997 :thumb:
Yeh that's a good idea but will have to wait til all of the health scares are over for that and fancied a job to kill a couple of hours while I'm at home.
Im based in Suffolk.
How would you describe the 997 shifter in comparison to the 996 out of interest?
just to make your decision making more difficult, I was going to buy one of Alex kits as compared with my last car, the 996 is a long throw. I tried a new 997 kit on a 996 and to be honest, there wasn't a lot a difference so I stayed with what I have.
Just before the lock down, I changed my engine mounts and unless I am imagining things, that has improved the gear change!
Possibly two things here - length of movement and precision of change!
Both engine and gearbox mount make a difference on the precision of the shift. The short shift is night and day from the standard shift and at first you think WTF have I done to my car once fitted. After a few days you realise what a bag of shoite the original one is and never want to go back.
5 years later you think - that's the best mod I've done to my car!!
My 997 shift has Alex's bearings so it's rock solid as well as having a slightly shorter throw. I agree with TV8 (it was my car he tried) there isn't a lot of difference in the movement.
My box baulks a bit when cold and I was concerned that the short shift would be too much but I can well understand others liking it.
I changed my engine mounts but the originals weren't bad and I suspect the improvement in the gearchange came from lubricating the linkages while I was underneath the car.
My car had a generic SSK fitted by the previous owner. I liked the shorter throw, but it always felt vague & imprecise.
Mike (MAldren) kindly let me try his last year, & while the throw was a bit longer than I'd like, it's perhaps the best all round gear change I've come across on any 996/997 I've tried. It really is the epitome of the "rifle bolt" change. If it was just a little shorter in throw, I'd say it would be perfect.
As I recall it's a bit shorter than a standard 996 shift which to my mind is awful & just doesn't suit the car, but not as short as other SSKs.
I eventually replaced mine with an SSK from Alex, it's not quite as "rock solid" as the 997 one which Alex modified for Mike, but I'm happy with it. I suspect the difference may in part be down to adjustment.
It is worth noting that most SSK's can't be adjusted with the standard Porsche green plastic clip thingy, as it won't fit over the SSK lever. I think the 997 SSK is the only one which can, so this will make it much easier to adjust properly. Other SSK's take a little fiddling, or rely on you having it setup properly with a std shifter.
The generic SSK the previous owner had fitted to my car didn't self centre very well, & consequently when I initially upgraded to Alex's SSK that didn't either. In the end I resorted to buying a std shifter from ebay & used that with the green clip to adjust properly & mark the cables before refitting Alex's SSK. The end result has transformed the shift experience & does self centre properly now.
