Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Reported cause
I was about 95% certain it was the starter after doing some research on the sound and at about $150, it's not an expensive gamble.
Leading evidence: 'starter' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'starter' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Disconnect battery' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Edit: I spoke with my local Porsche indy shop and he said in 8+ years he's never replaced a starter on the cayman/boxster, so unless it really becomes consistent or annoying, that he doesn't recommend bothering with it.

He said it's also a little difficult to confirm without taking the engine cover off and using a stethoscope, because it could be the clutch plate release bearing or a pulley and it all sort of sounds the same.

IIRC these engines use a tensioner pulley, it controls 'how tight' the belt is, as long as the replacement belt is the right length you don't make an adjustment with this.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have a squeal noise coming from the engine area on startup. Used to only happen when I had restarted the car after it being off for a few minutes, like running into the store or getting gas. Now it has started to happen on cold starts. Squeals for about a second at most and then goes away. I don't believe it is the belt because I changed it about 10k miles ago. Is a pulley going bad? Is it some kind of bearing in the clutch assembly? How can I go about diagnosing this better?

These idler and tensioner pulleys can go bad, perhaps one freezes up after it stops, when started it takes a second to break loose and that is when it squeals? If you changed it recently you know how to go back in there, I would pull off the belt, check that all pulleys move freely, look for belt wear or belt shavings around each pully.
It may be that the starter solenoid is going bad. If it does not retract promptly after starting, the starter gear rubs against the flywheel until it fully retracts. The sound is a bit different than a belt squeal, but it could be mistaken for that.
Take the inside engine cover off and do a cold start. It should be obvious if the sound is coming from the belt or not.
Go to about 30 seconds in this video. Is the sound similar to what you are hearing? If so, you'll need to replace the starter. Happened to me, not that expensive for a rebuilt one and not difficult to change. Bonus is the car spins over much faster.

Startup noise
Yooo I'm 99% sure that's it. Thanks for the link! It's not consistent tho, only sometimes. So I think I have some time before I have to replace it. Where can I get a rebuilt one?

He said it's also a little difficult to confirm without taking the engine cover off and using a stethoscope, because it could be the clutch plate release bearing or a pulley and it all sort of sounds the same. I am inclined to think it's the starter because there are times when it takes an extra second to turn over and start, but the noise isn't frequent enough for me to spend the time and money without being 100% certain.
Re: Startup noise
I just looked on-line at some FLAPS. Don't remember if it came from O'Reilly's or Autozone. The starter I received was a Bosh unit.
The sound was not consistent with me either. Funny thing is I have heard at least two other random mid-engine P-cars in parking lots starting with the same sound.
One thing I noticed was the starter laboring to turn the engine over like the battery was starting to go bad. After installing the new starter, the engine turned over much, much faster.
I was about 95% certain it was the starter after doing some research on the sound and at about $150, it's not an expensive gamble. I swapped it myself in about an hour. It's a bit tight to reach the bolts, but can be done without having to take too much apart. Just remember to disconnect the battery before doing anything.
At 98000 miles, my starter solenoid was doing the same thing. It was happening more frequently. I replaced it a week ago and the car starts quicker and doesn't sound labored when starting. Maybe I overreacted, but I like reliability. What are the chances a starter could leave you stranded at some inopportune time?
I had the same noise and changed the starter. One year later still no noises!! BTW I know this sounds crazy but on
Amazon
you can find a
Bosch
starter and the seller is awesome!! You can save a big chunk of change!! It comes from a well known parts importer. It was a
Bosch
New Starter! Like I said one year later and no noise and all sweet! Good luck! Changing the starter was not too bad if you read the tutorials and have all the tools. Good luck!
...whats going on here?!
I got my CS (155 000 Kms / 95 000 Miles) back last Friday, same occasional 1second bearing squeel (but only when starter motor is turning/engaged upon startup)
Starter reconditioned with new bearing and bushes.
Sounds to me like when someone in a room yawns. Wait a minute and someone else will yawn..and eventually continue around the room.
I don't mind buying parts off
Amazon
, FLAPS, etc. if it saves me from having to pay the
Porsche
Tax....
