Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

I bought an unloved 987 cayman nearly a year ago and have been slowly nursing it back to health. I am now getting round to the tail lights which I had at first written off as condensation however after looking closer at them to tackle the problem I have realised that in fact it is the inside material/paint which is peeling off and leaving it looking white instead of red. It is affecting both sides however the passenger side is far worse. I'm wondering what the best way to tackle this issue is without having to replace both light clusters. View attachment 201023

POST 2Original post

I'm going to guess your 987 is a 2006-2008 model and where you see the red flaking off is normally the factory white back up light part of the lens. Aftermarket replacements were available and I assume they still are, where the white area was made the same red as the rest of the lens. Some owners just didn't like the size of the white area. It's not something that can be done as a DIY project as far as I know and required/requires replacement. That means that the original lights are out there somewhere but most likely are long gone. I'm afraid you'll either have to put up with it or buy replacement lights. Perhaps affordable ones can be found on the internet. Or you could start at Suncoast to see what they have to offer as a replacement. Good luck.

POST 3Original post

That's what I was thinking. I guess I'll need to get searching for a replacement, thank you so much for the help!

POST 4Original post

Good luck. If you don't have a problem with the factory look, the larger white lens area, you might have success at one of the Porsche salvage businesses. Their prices will be as good as they get.

POST 5Original post

This also happened to my all red factory sport taillights... just ordered a new set...
