He'd said it was the drivers door that was indicating it wasn't sure if the deadlocks were engaging properly (likely a faulty microswitch or similar) so that was the one to change.

The weird bit is that, when the car has been 'locked' using the dash button (but the red light isn't on), I can pull the passenger side interior door handle just enough to engage the window drop microswitch (and drop the window, obviously) and then the dash button lights up red as it should and I can unlock the car using the button.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

9 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

TL;DR - I'm having some issues with the door locks/central locking system. If you read my wall of text and can help then thanks in advance! With 996 lockdown jobs in full swing, the next thing for me to tackle was the double beep I was getting from the car when I was locking/unlocking the car with the remote or the dash button. Last time I'd had the car at my local indie I'd asked him to plug PIWIS in to work out which door it was moaning about. He'd said it was the drivers door that was indicating it wasn't sure if the deadlocks were engaging properly (likely a faulty microswitch or similar) so that was the one to change. I didn't fancy spending Porsche money on the door locks so having read up on using replacement VW golf locks (more detail here: https://rennlist.com/forums/996-forum/1062574-diy-996-door-latch-replacement-detailed.html ) I ordered the drivers side one. My car uses the 9 pin versions. Much, much, much faffing later (that is properly fiddly job to juggle the lock paddle and door pull mechanism!) I had the new drivers side lock installed and.....the double beep was still there. F$%£. Another trip to eBay for the passenger side lock unit (thankfully a bit easier to fit!) and success, the double beep has gone and the car is locking properly/normally with the remote. The odd bit is that it's behaving weirdly with the dash central locking button. If the doors are closed and I press the lock button on the dash I can hear both locks engage in the doors, but the red light won't come on and the unlock button won't do anything. If I open either one of the doors it doesn't trigger the rest of the car to unlock (as it should do). The weird bit is that, when the car has been 'locked' using the dash button (but the red light isn't on), I can pull the passenger side interior door handle just enough to engage the window drop microswitch (and drop the window, obviously) and then the dash button lights up red as it should and I can unlock the car using the button. Doing the same on the drivers door doesn't change anything so I think this is related to passenger side only. My gut says that something in the passenger lock isn't reporting back to the system that it's closed properly so doesn't then enable the dash button logic to get to a state where it can be unlocked. Outstanding questions would be why doesn't that issue flag up when locking with the remote, and why does dropping the window suddenly make everything work properly? I even tried manipulating the passenger door lock mech manually but the behaviour is ONLY tied to the window drop microswitch. Before I buy another passenger side lock - not sure if I should go with another VW unit or a second hand Porsche one - has anyone got any bright ideas?

POST 2Original post

A double beep tells you the car is seeing a fault on the car system when its locked with a single beep saying something is open when it shouldn't be on locking . The piwis said it was a fault with the drivers lock .. unfortunately this can mean the passengers side .. software error on the tester is well known for this . You have fitted VW parts and now have a fault that i for one have never seen and i suspect may well be the cause . This is very simple to diagnose with a tester .. there is a section called actual values and you can see what every switch on the system is reporting. This is the best way forward .. a code / values read out .. you can if you wish replace the passengers side with a Porsche lock and see what happens but a system check with a tester is all i can recommend even though there's very little chance of that atm .. The only garage i'm aware of that's partially open atm is about 30 miles from you .

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks deMort. Figured it might need proper diagnosis, and that can wait until all of the Covid stuff dies down, but thought it was worth asking the forums. Car still locks on the remote, so no big issues really. The VW parts are only about £20 a side, so tempted to order a second one anyway just to pull it apart and see if I can work out what's going on. Might be useful info for someone else tbh.

POST 4Original post

There are various VW group parts available depending on the level of car, this is the correct part: 996 Door lock RH 8N2837016B

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

That's for the drivers door. Passenger door is 3B2837015F which converts to 3D2837015 in VW part numbers. I've ordered a slightly different unit off eBay for £15 last night, so I'll see if that fixes the issue.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

For the sake of completeness, and in case anyone has a similar issue and stumbles across this on Google: Bought another passenger lock unit with the same part number - Porsche 3B2837015F which converts to VW 3D2837015. Unit that arrived was identical, bar having the key barrel part on the lock unit (not used in the 996/986). Pulled the door apart, replaced the unit, everything now working perfectly. Remote locking, locking from dash, lock with the key etc. Success. Can only assume that the original VW unit I bought had a fault with a microswitch somewhere and it wasn't playing nice with the alarm system.

POST 7Original post

Hi, I'm also having central locking/alarm issues and I have also traced the fault back to the passenger side door lock mechanism. Which E-bay item did you buy that worked as there are many listed and previous experience not all where compatible? Thanks in advance My problem is extremely irritating as it also includes even whilst driving if i hit a bump, the central locking tries to operate, the horn beeps twice and then the courtesy lights come on...

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Oooof. That sounds annoying. I don't envy you having to live with that! This was the one I ordered for the passenger side that worked correctly: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Front-Le...e=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649 And drivers side for reference: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Front-Ri...e=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649 Note that for both of those I had to make a small modification to the plastic mechanism. Check this Rennlist article ( https://rennlist.com/forums/996-for...-latch-replacement-detailed.html#post15939596 ) for more detail. Only takes a minute with a hot knife and, at £15/20 a side versus the Porsche price, it's a small inconvenience and so much easier than trying to swap the spring loaded parts over.
