Yes, I searched; no, I didn't find the answer to these: 1. Does the CEL ever shut itself off, or must it always be reset with a tool? 2. Can I harm anything by driving with CEL on for awhile before taking car in? Thanks for the help.

Some CELs will reset after X many starts. You can also reset the CEL by disconnecting the battery for a short time. Whether it is harmful is entirely dependent on what the CEL is for. Get the codes read.

For about a hundred bucks you can buy a code reader and with a rentech.org membership you can get the code list. It will help you decide if you need immediate service or if it can wait. People have also suguested going to autozone and they will read the code for you. If you post the code here on rennlist someone can usually help out. I had an o2 sensor CEL that went in and out on the way to the dealer and they pulled it up in the computer memory, it stays there unless someone erases it.
