Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

18 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm sorry to ask something that seems as though it's been done to death, but what do you think would be the most quiet upgrade. A catbypass setup, or aftermarket mufflers. I tried the muffler bypass pipes and I'm "simply not allowed to keep them." It seems like the cat bypass setup would be the best bet, but I just wanted some opinions before I sprung for something that might be coming right back off in a week. Thank you so much for any and all input. I really miss the muffler bypass pipes.

POST 2Original post

Keep the muffler bypass pipes and buy wifey a pair of Bose noise cancelling headphones to wear in the car! You get what you want, and she'll be in blissful silence when in the car Best $350 you'll ever spend. Chris.

POST 3Original post

[QUOTE=cdodkin]Keep the muffler bypass pipes and buy wifey a pair of Bose noise cancelling headphones to wear in the car! I agree! With the additon of an iPod and Bluetooth, you will be doubly-golden.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

LOL.....Well that's not such a bad choice, I never thought of that. I doubt she'd go for it, but love the idea. Definitely the best of both worlds.

POST 5Original post

Of course, even the Bose headphones can't match the selective deafness which occurs after a few years of marriage - this blocks out 100% of sound at certain frequencies, usually those of your significant other's voice when complaining Best of luck!

POST 6Original post

I have the Fabspeed exhaust and it sounds great. Not crazy loud so the girlfriend doesn't complain.

POST 7Original post

Looking for some bypasses if you are selling your's....

POST 8Original post

how do u pass smog check w/o cats? Or do you replace the cats back on every couple of years? I'd do catback instead of cats unless you are flashed. even so, flashing does affect reliability. aftermarket exhaust will not. not having cats is really not a good idea as it is really loud (not to mention it's bad for environment). Yeah, I'm pretty green...

POST 9Original post

Could not pass here in Nashville as they look for cats when you go through emissions.....now would they really look hard on such a new car? Probably not.

POST 10Original post

I have GHL (regular i think), anyway good tone, loud at the right times, and a nice upgrade. Sounds good with orange cap mod, and sounds good from outside the car or windows down, underpass, etc. Not an over the top attention getter.

POST 11Original post

Who cares what the women think! Grow some ***** and get what you want!! Whoops, the wife is calling me. " I'll get on those dishes in just a second, honey!" TW

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for all your support guys. So are we on the same page thinking that cat bypass pipes are more quiet than aftermarket mufflers then?

POST 13Original post

I haven't experienced the 996 cat bypass in person, but based on my experiences on other cars, I doubt that's the case. Pretty freaking loud on the the na car(much louder than my aftermarket GHL's on the 996 - but it's a bit of apples and oranges), but not so bad on the turbo car was my experience.

POST 15Original post

PSE with the switch installed. You can switch the exhaust to quiet mode when you want and have the great PSE sound the rest of the time.

POST 17Original post

I suggest the noise cancelling headphones when speaking with the wife.

POST 18Original post

Alright, 2 part off topic question- PSE is made by Eisemann (thats what is on my car) right? If so, how much louder are the bypass pipes then the PSE?
