Also not had any issues with abrasion etc (I dont use my car on the track) - so not a mod I could see a benefit with.

Any reason I shouldn't use a VW version for £8 each?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

7 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi All, Am just collecting together all the bits for my jobs on the car, while we are in lock-down. I am doing lots of the brake hardlines - so am thinking of updating the flexi-hoses. I saw on a previous post that the flexis are all M10 x 1mm Female on both ends and 320mm length - is this correct, as there are lots of reasonable priced version of this size of hose. Any reason I shouldn't use a VW version for £8 each? Cheers Ben

POST 2Original post

No reason at all not to use them if they are the right length - I did the same on mine. New rubber hoses will be better than the old ones. Braided are a con - they are rubber inside, and if the braid added stiffness somehow it would reduce the flexibility.

POST 3Original post

When you've chosen the brake pipe lines please put a link or a part number here on your thread as I'm going to need to do this at some point and saving money is always a bonus.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks Both! Wasz - we exchanged messages on this a while back. The hoses you bought are no longer listed on ebay. Have looked at a few sites that are selling various non-OEM options - they are all female M10x1 either end. But some are selling 295mm lengths others 320mm - so am guessing anything between 295 and 320mm is ok. I will post once I have ordered the parts.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am thinking these ones are a reasonable make and sensible price..... https://www.buycarparts.co.uk/febi-bilstein/1874016 Will have a quick look at my current ones tomorrow. But would welcome any thoughts.....

POST 6Original post

They're not braided to make them stiffer. They're braided to reduce expansion under pressure which makes braking more efficient. The braiding over the rubber prevents/reduces the expansion. I'm not sure about the VW ones but I read somewhere that the Porsche Flexi hoses are reinforced internally (so they don't expand like regular rubber ones). I've removed all mine and I can say that the rears definitely aren't reinforced. Not sure about the fronts. You can get a full set of SS braided hoses for c£70 so I just don't see why you wouldn't

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quick update: I have gone with a decent brand of standard hose - Meyle. Reading online, they all have to comply with a minimum spec, although some obviously better it. I went with these: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PAIR-of-...e=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649 Hi Uncle P - I havent gone with braided..... I didnt fancy braided for several reasons - in the main because I couldnt justify the extra cost - when I have never felt a lack of braking force/bite (and the internet jury is still out on whether thats proven). Also not had any issues with abrasion etc (I dont use my car on the track) - so not a mod I could see a benefit with. Read quite a few negative stores re braided hoses - so didnt seem worth it for me. But thats the beauty of car mods/upgrades - everyone can do their own thing.
