My microswitch was fine, the issue was caused by the thin plastic cover on the hook which was damaged.
Leading evidence: 'caused by the thin plastic cover' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'caused by the thin plastic cover' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check microswitch it activates in the receptacle' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

There is a service bulletin out there somewhere that shows the small mod you make to the plastic cover to allow it to be installed on the hook without disassembly.

I'd first check the microswitch it activates in the receptacle.

The part is cheap (less than a tenner) but may require a full or part strip of the assembly to replace, I effected a repair using the broken off bit and some superglue.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Summer is (nearly) here so I'll kick off with an obligatory cab roof issue.
Roof opens and stows fine but when putting it up all is well until the last bit where the retracting hook connects to the top of the windscreen frame.
The hook lines up with the corresponding recepticle fine and then it retracts to what seems to be the locking position. It stops and then extends and retracts again (like it's having another go) then sort of gives up and re-extends leaving about 10-15mm to the recepticle.
I'm guessing some sort of adjustment is out?
1.Try this. Sit inside the car and pull the final part and it should close with a little persuasion.
2. Soak the roof in water and leave to dry.
3. Hopefully now fixed.
Try the above although i have to admit i'm bemused by the soaking in water ..
love a bit more info on that if it's not a tongue in cheek answer as to just what you are thinking of
There are a couple of items and each can be seen with a tester and looking at actual values ( probably a garage job ) .. x2 switches in the roof lock mechanism and the front tuning fork micro switch are some i can think of .
I expect the rear windows wont close .
The first time I drop the roof in a new year on my Boxster she always has a hissy fit and decides to throw her dollies out of the pram, she did it at Oulton Park 2 weeks ago and refused to close the rear roof cover on the way down and refused to accept that it was locked on the way up, a few attempts at opening and closing soon sorted it, as it has for the last 5 years

Thanks all, and yes the rear windows were not working either!
I'm leaning towards the microswitch that the hook operates as Alex initially mentioned.
A bit of searching through some USA sites found some suggestion that it could be as simple as the plastic cover which covers the hook could be at fault, apparently there is a TSB that mentions it but have not found it yet.
Lack of use could also be playing a part but up to now the dozen or so cycles I've run it through the rest of the cycle seems ok (touch wood).
I'll investigate further now that we have some decent weather (and more time on my hands).
As a PS deMort, could the soaking in water allow the hood to stretch a bit and make it a little more complient after periods of prolonged storage?
Mine periodically has these spells of cycling from locked to unlocked. I've taken to carrying a small screwdriver to poke up and trip the microswitch (which seems to get lazy once in a while) and it latches fine. Only does it 1 time in 5-8, but a PIA. One day I'll actually replace the microswitch, which I suspect is the issue.
Hi,
If the roof was out away damp then the material tightens up.
Used to do this often at the OPC when I was there.
Outing the roof up then sorting water loosens you the material and then drys that way. Fixing it if that was the issue.
As the sun was out and having more time on my hands than a self employed person would want I thought I'd have play and let you know what I found.
My microswitch was fine, the issue was caused by the thin plastic cover on the hook which was damaged. The cover splits and loses a section and/or moves around causing intermittant operation. On mine a curved plastic section had fallen off and this is the bit that actvates the microswitch.
The part is cheap (less than a tenner) but may require a full or part strip of the assembly to replace, I effected a repair using the broken off bit and some superglue.
There is a service bulletin out there somewhere that shows the small mod you make to the plastic cover to allow it to be installed on the hook without disassembly. I remember, because I replaced mine this way...just can't remember what the modification was. :?:
