As to whether or not you see a ripple will depend upon where the dent is located, the type of metal being repaired, and of course the skill of the tech repairing the dent.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
15 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

So going over my new(to me) 996 C2 I found a subtle flat spot dent on the "shoulder" of the rear fender. It is on the top side over the rear tire. Has anyone had any luck with paintless dent removal in this area. It is not a bad dent but i notice it when I'm at at jus the right angle. Andy
They have a tool that surrounds the dent and pulls outward. They can then level back out with other tools if not completely straight. I don't know what the tool was called, sorry. I did watch the process and was amazed at the simplicity. It took about 30 minutes and there was no drilling etc. Before starting they said if drilling necessary they'd have to enter under the fender behind the wheel. However, he was confident the tool would do the job and it did.
Have had great results on numerous cars. Most of the better guys doing this work can remove trim panels. Watched them disamble a BMW 7 series the other day at the dealer.
My '00 C2 arrived with perfect panels. But I happen to know the guy who took the dents out before it was put up for sale. Based on what he told me, they can do miracles with these things if they're good.
If you have a hole, make sure to fill it with epoxy or paint it or something. Don't leave the bare metal hole or you might see rust down the road........................
I used DentPro in San Diego for a small dent. The way they fix the dent is by sticking a long metal rod through an opening and then they "tap" the dent out. It takes a while for them to do it but it really comes out great. You will always still notice the slight "ripple" in the area because you know where to look...
As to whether or not you see a ripple will depend upon where the dent is located, the type of metal being repaired, and of course the skill of the tech repairing the dent. An aluminum hood would be the toughest in terms of not leaving a ripple, especially if the car is black which of course magnifies the smallest imperfection.
When I bought my 964 it had a dent in every body panel except the hood. I took it to one of those dent dr. guys and they would not permit me to watch them do it, but they removed all of the dents perfectly. Except for the one that had cracked the paint, I could not find where the dents had been, and this was in a black car.
The problem is, how do you know if the guy doing your car is a 10 year veteran or some dude who just got trained last tuesday?
